"This book is a film lover's dream. It chronicles the entire history of cinema, and this updated edition includes new movies…"
Book Page
"It's a perfect distraction for the film buff trying to get you to sit through that 14-hour Terrence Malick movie."
Connie Ogle, The Miami Herald
"I'm very pleased that there appears to be no discrimination over genre or the country of origin. The collection of films here is appropriate for any true connoisseur of the medium. For the most part, the writers are knowledgeable about their subject and provide just enough about each film to whet our appetite, which is the true purpose of the volume, not that I need much pushing to watch more movies. There are rare gems here that will have me searching the rare video lists out there to check out. The book is an excellent value. It's heavy and substantial, clocking in at nearly 1000 pages. For each movie you'll get vital cast and crew information as well as Oscar nominations. English translations are provided for foreign films. Nearly ever film sports at least one photograph. I really do think this is one of those books that belong on every serious videophile's reference shelf, and I know that it will enhance mine for years to come. Consider it required reading from this course on filmography. There are genre-specific titles that I hope to be able to share with you in the future. The new edition editor is Ian Haydn Smith, and he's literally throwing down the gauntlet for you to choose your own movies to die for."

Look no further, this is the best encyclopedia of movies.

One might ask, why bother buying this book, there is much information available for free on IMDb. This is exactly what I was thinking...until I stumbled upon 2008's edition of '1001 movies'. I instantly decided to buy a latest edition, I was lucky, 2015 version was released only a couple of weeks ago. Every page in this book is about a masterpiece in the history of film, I was surprised to find here so many of my favorite movies, not only classic and modern American ones, but also European and Asian. You will not get to read here about movies like 'The Equalizer' or 'Fury', while they are good, they did not exactly make a difference in the history of their genres. But you most certainly, will get 'Reservoir Dogs', 'Star Wars V', 'Casablanca' as well as Polish 'Decalogue', Russian 'Levaithan' and Korean 'Oldboy'. Many movies are accompanied by photos, details about the film and a professional review. It's just so nice to have this book, the quality of paper is also really good.
As you may expect, not all your favorite movies will be listed here. I was surprised that 'Kill Bill' was not there, I saw it in 2008 edition, but apparently, they removed it in 2015 in favor of 'Django Unchained'. One of the most beautiful movies that I saw - Kim Ki-duk's 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring' was not there either. 'Dawn of the planet of the Apes' is another one...I am sure there are others, too, but it shouldn't really influence your decision to buy. It's a must-have book for every movie fan, over 100 years of amazing movies is just one click away.

One-Of-A-Kind

I bought the initial 2003 edition & was very impressed with the content, as well as, the beautiful, full page stills. I missed the 2005/2008/2011/2013 updates, so I thought I would try the 2015 to see what was new. The first improvement I noticed were the colored year tabs like a dictionary. I also liked the little sidebar blurbs on the films that consist of snippets by reviewers, actors' comments & trivia. The movie posters exclusive to this edition are a welcome addition. They substitute for some of the smaller images, but they aren't always better. I realize something has to be sacrificed for new material, but I miss some of those full page shots in my original edition. But, in the end, this is an exquisite book that I could not be without. I may even purchase some of the in-between editions to discover how they differ. FYI, it actually contains over 1150 films as opposed to 1001. The outer cover is a little cheap & wears easily starting with the corners. But that's a minor complaint. Mr. Schneider has done an admirable job. There is nothing else out there like it. It's not just a mindless, coffee table book. It is a well written work that truly is one-of-a-kind.

More Euro-centric than I had hoped for
By calvinnme
Overall, this is a pretty good guide to the best movies. Just be aware it is a guide to world cinema. I'd guess 25% to 35% of the films are foreign, and sometimes it is difficult for an American to "get" films from another culture unless you have a Criterion copy with all of the commentary that usually comes with it. I was surprised to see it include dreck like Independence Day and ignore Buster Keaton's "The Cameraman" while including "A Night at the Opera" when so many of the jokes in that film CAME from The Cameraman! Well, we can't agree on everything can we?
