A SOUNDVIEW EXECUTIVE SUMMARY BEST BUSINESS BOOK
Accountability is one of the biggest challenges business leaders face, but it can also be one of the most important factors leading to success. This groundbreaking book explains why and how.
Top business consultant and speaker Greg Bustin has dedicated a career to working with CEOs and the leadership teams of companies on this crucial topic. Over the last five years, he has interviewed and surveyed more than 3,200 executives around the world--from such admired companies as Marriott, Container Store, Ernst & Young, Sony, Herman Miller, Nucor, and Southwest Airlines--to understand how high-performing corporations successfully create and sustain a culture of purpose, trust, and fulfillment. Along the way, Bustin developed a set of leadership tools that will increase accountability and drive success for any type of organization.
Accountability will transform the way you manage, maintain, and motivate yourself, your team, and, ultimately, your workforce. As a business leader's guide to the best practices to turn longterm vision into reality, it introduces the Seven Pillars of Accountability and shows how each pillar is a crucial part of effective leadership:
- Character
- Unity
- Learning
- Tracking
- Urgency
- Reputation
- Evolution
Lack of accountability is the single greatest obstacle facing even the most experienced leaders. It saps morale, drains profits, and disenfranchises employees--and it can shift your team into crisis mode on a daily basis. Greg Bustin shares his own stories, including what he learned the hard way: if you are not clear about everything--vision, values, objectives, strategy, rewards, and penalties--the likelihood of achieving your goals is slim. Bustin has tapped the experience of the senior leaders of the world's most respected organizations, and he shares their stories and advice in this book.
Accountability offers powerful concepts and practical examples you can apply in your organization along with provocative questions and useful exercises to help you create a high-performance culture in your workplace. It's a must-read for anyone who wants practical, actionable steps to build and grow a thriving business.

Cut and dry without much pizazz
By Ryan J. Dejonghe
Daniel Pink’s praise is what encouraged me to read ACCOUNTABILITY. Pink gave one of the most viral and inspiring business talks at TED. Pink’s book DRIVE is an amazing book. If you have to read only one business book this year, and you haven’t already read it, you should definitely read DRIVE. Pink is deft at presenting scientific research, technical terms, and case studies in a catchy format that motivates action. Unfortunately, I did not find the same elements in Greg Bustin’s ACCOUNTABILITY.
I am sure Bustin’s repertoire precedes him. From the dust jacket description and his own personal stories within ACCOUNTABILITY, Bustin seems like he is transformational as a consultant and speaker. Whatever that magic is, it doesn’t translate well to book form. What we are presented are mostly stories about individual companies and what they represent. What’s really missing is the spark and science of how they got there. Stories are okay, but without the science, it doesn’t click. Contrast this to Bren Brown, who describes herself as a story teller, but has the research and scientific motivation to back it up, as evidenced in her popular book DARING GREATLY. As she says, “maybe stories are just data with a soul.” In this case, ACCOUNTABILITY’s soul seems a bit dry.
Beside the stories, we are given new acronyms, measurement indexes, and analogies that are okay, but nothing that really pops. Some other books that I’ve read that have great analogies are JUGGLING ELEPHANTS and HOW FULL IS YOUR BUCKET. Covey really nailed it with THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE with all kinds of great new developments, such as quadrant thinking, filling the fish tank with big rocks first, and sharpening the saw. I’m not walking away from ACCOUNTABILITY with any of that same revolutionary motivation.
Is this book helpful? Sure, it can be. Bustin has done a lot of work to define the eponymous word accountability and why it is so important in the workplace. He offers helpful advice that coincides with modern business thought. My biggest complaint is that it’s all pretty cut and dry without much pizazz that the book’s successful counterparts seem to offer.
Thanks to McGraw-Hill Professional for providing me with an electronic galley review copy.

A Powerful Handbook for Driving Accountability in Organizations
By Nina Atwood
Greg Bustin offers a roadmap - not just for talking about accountability - but for bringing it to life within an organization. As a fellow Vistage Chair for eleven years, I can tell you that Greg's Seven Pillars of Accountability ring absolutely true. They are the keys to fulfilling the mission of the business, whatever that may be. This book IS research based, contrary to another reviewer's opinion. It is qualitative research, based on the assessment of thousands of small to mid sized companies. It's also based on hundreds of hours of interviews of successful CEOs.
If you are a leader who sees accountability as crucial to the success of your business, read this book. Take the assessment in Chapter Three. Better yet, have all of your key leaders and managers take it as well. Buy the book and have everyone on your team read it [I get no monetary compensation for book sales, BTW, even though I am Greg's colleague]. Then take the results of the assessment to an offsite for discussion. Use your team to create your own roadmap to greater accountability, utilizing Greg's principles. The book is a terrific tool: use it to empower your team and you will almost certainly have a better business with an even better culture and the results you want.

Outstanding
By Mikel A Richards
I work with CEOs and leaders virtually every day and have found the concept of accountability, while sorely needed, to be hard to characterize (much less to teach and understand) in practical, simple to understand terms. In Accountability: The Key to Driving a High-Performance Culture, Greg Bustin has taken his many years of experience on this topic and codified them in written terms that are easy to understand and apply.
Having seen him myself and in the midst of my CEOs and leaders, Bustin brings to life in person as well as via the written word what the concept of accountability is based upon and how to apply it. I encourage you to get this book whether you are a CEO/leader, work closely with CEOs/leaders or merely want to improve yourself and your own accountability.
