This diminutive tome is a particularly sketchy treatise on the already vague subject of leadership, stitched together with excerpts from The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and other Maxwell books and featuring an ad at the back directing readers to a Web site where they can buy one of the author's longer works. Maxwell's themes-don't just pull rank, don't sweat the small stuff, establish rapport with co-workers, "empower" underlings-are commonplaces of leadership lore, couched in aphorisms ("The boss says 'I'; the leader, 'we'"), pseudo-statistics ("Twenty percent of your priorities will give you 80 percent of your production") and bromides ("If you lack vision, look inside yourself"). But in distilling this wisdom, the nitty-gritty that might make it useful has been boiled off, leaving readers to grapple unaided with bullet-pointed truisms like "Deal wisely with difficult people." Perfunctory leadership profiles of usual suspect Theodore Roosevelt, Princess Di, executives and football notables scarcely flesh out the meager intellectual content of this book, which seems, more than anything, like a $10 congrats card for the recently promoted.

A good starting point for developing leadership skills

I wanted to find a concise, applicable, no non-sense approach to leadership skills. After several disappointing finds, I chose this book. Within the first chapter, it appeared that Maxwell’s approach fit these requirements. The rest of the book followed suit without disappointment. In his book, Maxwell (2002) discusses the importance of developing leadership skills and how those skills can impact the many facets of one’s life. While each of us may begin and end at different points on the leadership development scale, he believes we each possess the ability to improve our leadership skills. Maxwell discusses the various traits of an effective leader and how this can influence one’s work and life. Maxwell provides a clear approach to building leadership skills. He stresses the importance of these skills in work and everyday life. His suggestions are concise, yet inclusive enough to provide enriching ideas for even the seasoned leader. Maxwell has a clear writing style that allows the busy professional to put the book down and pick it up without losing direction.

I own several John C. Maxwell audio Cd's, ...

I own several John C. Maxwell audio Cd's, if I did not own any of his other Cd's this would have been beneficial, but since I do own some of his Cd's this seemed to be a collaboration of information from his others works and was nothing that I had not already heard before.

Great book. This is the second time I bought it.

I first got this book two years ago. It is remarkable. Yet a fast read. I got the audio version then followed by the paper edition as I do with any book that I call a keeper. When I scratched one of the two CDs, I immediately bought this book again.
This book is one of those that every person can benefit by. It is an injection of wisdom for work, life, decision making and much more.
The way it is written is very entertaining. One example is that the CEO of Coke a Cola walked in and addressed the meeting with a direct time line using the number of a Billion which covered months, a Billion Days, A billion Minutes, a Billion Days. These numbers covered when Human life appeared. Christianity appeared. All the way up to "A Billion Coke a colas was yesterday. Now what are we going to do to make a Billion Coke a Colas tomorrow"
This book is what I affectingly call a goldmine.
