A must-have for every toddler!

This is a great book for toddlers! Big bold letters stand out to help them learn them by being easily recognizable. The upper case letter on each page is recessed w/ directional arrows so your child can trace the letter, helping improve fine motor skills as well as teaching them how to form each letter. (The lower case letters also have directional arrows, but are not recessed.) Each letter has two pictures w/ it--Mm is for monkey, lift the flap! (we all know how much kids love lift the flap books!) and underneath is "Mm is for mouse." All pictures are bold and bright and clean, without any unnecessary clutter, making it visually stimulating while at the same time allowing the book to fulfill its purpose. Every toddler should have one of these!

Her favorite, a nightly "read"

At her first trip to the library, my daughter picked out this book. Turned out to be her favorite so we bought it. At 18 months old she loves lift flap books and trying to say the animals names and sounds. Working on letters and numbers are fun and she's just starting to trace the letters. Definitely a lot of learning and at different levels. I can see this book being a favorite for a long time.

Excellent fine motor practice

I own this and also the Touch and Trace numbers book. My 3 year old is not too interested yet but does pull them out occasionally. One letter is shown per page and two word examples are given for each letter, on and underneath a flap. Each capital letter is sunk below the page, and both capital and lowercase letters have stroke lines with green and red dots indicating where to start and stop (son does not understand these yet but enjoys feeling the letters nonetheless). The pages are colorful, fun, and sturdy.

Great Manual Backed With Scripture

This book was brief, well outlined and proceeded logically from point to point, instructing the junior pastor in what would be needed for him to bring himself to maturity, one step at a time. It is readable in a couple of hours and may be used as an overview when digging into one's own expanded notes is impractical. While this book will not disappoint the deacon or lay pastor required only to preach or pray publicly from time to time, it may not carry all of the depth required in the way of axioms leading to fully mature exposition. Basic rules for interpretation are listed. Detailed suggestions that even include appropriate gesticulation are also written. Ultimately though like so many new skills, one can only learn so much by reading a text. The mature expositor can only become proficient by going to the newrest street corner, Bible study or prayer meeting with his prepared text and practice the "art of prophesying.' May God bless the efforts of all who read this book, even if they are reading it like me in order to assure that I may properly shepherd my family each morning.

In this entry William Perkins provides a brief overview regarding Scripture and its importance (even necessity) for righteous and holy living. As noted in its Preface, the material is not merely for preachers but also for all people. One of the things I found particularly helpful in chapter three was a one- or two-sentence summary of every book in the bible. That alone is worth the price of the e-book! But there is more; that particular section caught my attention, and I am not a preacher but a layman. I am sure there are many textbooks available on the subject but this book provides enough for most people occupying the pews.

This book contains very little original thought and amounts to 40 or fewer normal sized pages of repetition and direct quotes. The author seemed to think that he could pass this off as a real book by enlarging the font size, absurdly expanding the margins and inserting numerous exhibits. This is a very poorly published book that has no business selling for $29. I am curious as to why only 2 of the prior reviews are negative, since this is such an obvious fraud.

A relatively expensive, self-published cut-and-paste job of 147 pages of which nearly half are either: slabs of Buffett's/Munger's/Other's direct words, a glossary, blank pages, white space or footnotes. A so-called intrinsic valuation of Kraft is poorly discussed.

To read or not to read?

"I am not a reader, I am a writer" - so goes the punchline to an old Russian joke about a reindeer herder who is applying to study philology at the Moscow State University. Well, I can certainly relate: reading is difficult for me, writing - a breeze. Given a choice, I substitute the reading of big tomes like Leo Tolstoy's mega drama War and Peace for its Cliffs Notes version.

It's not that I don't want to read Alice Schroeder's "The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life" - I do, but the sheer weight of that book's 976 pages scares the daylights out of me. Why couldn't Alice just spend the time to digest her story into something more palatable to an average Joe, I thought. Bud Labitan must have read my thoughts, because a few days later I received an email from him telling me about his new book on Buffett and Munger.

I had no idea who Bud was, but was so impressed with his mind reading skills, that I told him that I would review his book, if he sent it to me. He did and about a week later the book was in my mailbox. Yesterday, I was stuck at my desk for most of the day and so, finally, got a chance to read it...

To fairly evaluate a book, one must first determine who its target audience is. So, my first challenge in reading Labitan's book was trying to figure out who it was written for. Was it intended for a novice or an expert? Is it a guide to a novel investment process, an introduction to value investing in general, or, perhaps, a personal historical overview - a biography of sorts?
The Four Filters Invention of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger (Two Friends Transformed Behavioral Finance)
On the one hand, many terms used in the book are not first properly defined, on the other, the concepts presented are rather basic and examples pull numbers out of a virtual hat. Some personal stories from Buffet's and Munger's life are retold, but they were not selected for their heartwarming qualities and these retellings are so heavy in quotes that they fail to engage. In fact, the book relies on quotes so much (there are 124 of them, more than there are pages of content) that it makes you wonder if what you are reading is not, in fact, a report for a business class Bud took at Purdue.

In addition to quotes, the book is also heavy in name dropping. The two names most overused in the book are that of Benjamin Graham of the "used cigar butt" investing fame and Philip Fisher, a pioneer growth investor, who emphasized quality. Names of Phil Carret, John Burr Williams, Lou Simpson, Jack Byrne and Charles Mizrahi, among others, get heavy use, as well. The one name that doesn't get enough mention is that of Rose Blumkin. Mrs. B. (born Rose Gorelick outside Minsk, Russia in 1893) started Nebraska Furniture Mart in 1937, sold a majority share to Buffet in 1983 and was still involved in day-to-day operations until shortly before her death at the age of 104 - she is a legend!

Along with names of important people, the book prominently features names of businesses whose stock Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway owned over the years. Of course, GEICO, Coca Cola, Gillette and Kraft Foods make the requisite list. But in the end, the book simply boils down to rehashing and restating Buffett's investment philosophy of buying "at sensible prices of businesses that have good underlying economics and are run by honest and able people" ad nauseum.

If you savor every written word and are looking for a well written, properly edited and nicely formatted volume - this self-published booklet is not it. If you are interested in a comprehensive biography of Buffett and Munger - look elsewhere. If you are looking for "an amazing Behavioral Finance Formula" advertised on the book's back cover - you will not find it here. But, if you, like Bud, think that the main purpose of a glossary is to add pages, even if it is of terms never used in the book - this is the book for you!

Despite all this, I did find some value in the book. Labitan, obviously, spent time studying Buffett and Munger and was able to pull many relevant quotes from Berkshire Hathaway Annual Stockholder Reports as well as from several other sources. The book is no substitute for Cliff Notes on Alice Schroeder's Snowball, but it is short and if skimmed to skip the many repetitions and ignore the few available details that are incomprehensible anyway, can provide a quick introduction to the subject of value investing as practiced by Buffett and Munger.

Dr. Peter S. Ruckman tells it like it is in this book. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the truth about the Charismatic cult.

This book refutes the heretical teachings of the modern Charismatic cult (some of which can be seen in my comment to the "Why I am not Ignorant" review).

While tongues were spoken in the early church, they never referred to the unintelligable gibberish spoken by a modern day Charasmatic. They refer to a known language that is unkown (foreign) to the hearer (or the speaker). See Acts 2:6.

The speaking of tongues was part of the sign gifts (along with healing and prophesying) given to the apostles and their converts in the early first century. The sign gifts were evidence that God was behind the preaching of the gospel because they were miraculous in nature. The signs were directed specifically at Jewish non-believers, for the Jews require a sign (but the Greeks seek after wisdom. I Cor 1:22). All of these signs went away as the apostles died and the Bible was completed near the end of the first century.

Paul laid out the rules for speaking in tongues in I Corinthians 14. The title of this review is a direct quote of verse 38 of that chapter. These rules were:

1) Only two, or at most three, men are to speak in tongues at any service (vs 26).
2) The men are to speak one at a time (by course) (vs 26).
3) An interpreter who knows the language being spoken must be present (vs 27).
4) Any man who speaks should be in control of himself (vs 32).
5) Women are forbidden from speaking in tongues (vs 35).
6) Order is to be maintained in the service (vs 40).

As you can see, none of these rules are kept today. The speaking of unintelligable gibberish, accompanied by uncontrollable body movements, which is practiced in this Laodicean age is unscriptural from start to finish.

This book does an excellent job of pointing out many of the fallacies of the modern tongues movement. I highly recommend it to anyone searching for truth on the matter.

If you are predisposed on the matter, because you or your fellow church members already speak in tongues, and aren't going to be persuaded by any evidence to the contrary, save your time and money.

About the Author
An award-winning author of over fifteen historical romance novels, Margaret began her career at the age of eight when she concocted stories featuring a lovely damsel and a handsome, misunderstood thief. She's had a soft spot for handsome, misunderstood rogues ever since.

Unknowingly pursuing her destiny, Margaret graduated with distinction from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. She also demonstrated a facility for language by winningthe Winston Churchill Silver Medal for public speaking. She now utilizes this gift of the gab by giving workshops for various writing groups, including Romance Writers of America and the Canadian Authors Association.

A past president of Toronto Romance Writers, Margaret lives in Toronto with her husband, two teenagers and two cats.

A wonderful romance

The Earl of Montclair never recovered from the death of his beloved wife six years ago. He depends on his oldest daughter Allis to run the castle and his friend Baron Rennick DeFrouchette to oversee the estate. Although not up to it, Montclair hosts a tournament. On the eve of the event, Allis sees Connor of Llanstephan, a poor wandering knight whom King Richard sent home from the Holy Land in disgrace. Connor told His Highness that the slaughter of unarmed prisoners, even infidels, was wrong. Allis and Connor are instantly attracted to each other. Although she detests Rennick as a bully, Allis accepts his proposal because she fears for her siblings and her people.

Lord Oswald arrives and meets with Rennick to discuss the plot to assassinate King Richard. Oswald believes that Connor is the perfect pawn to kill the king while bringing the Welsh conspirators support to their cause if Rennick can keep Allis out of the way.

THE MAIDEN AND HER KNIGHT portrays a different picture of King Richard the Lionhearted through the eyes of a once believing but now skeptical Connor. The story line is exciting as readers wonder if Oswald is right that Connor is the perfect dupe to kill His Highness because of the horrifying Crusade. Allis is a brave sacrificing soul while Connor suffers from what he observed in the Holy Land. Margaret Moore, already known for strong tales like HIS FORBIDDEN KISS, A SCOUNDREL'S KISS, and ROGUE'S EMBRACE, paints another winning historical tale.

just ok

Well I have to agree with several of the other reviewers that this book didn't quite live up to the back cover. I have enjoyed several of Margaret Moore's other books and was expecting this one to be as enjoyable as those. The best i can give it is an ok rating.
The story is of a lonely penniless knight trying to make his way in a world were you are ruled by your actions. He has fallen out of favor with the king and now is working to rebuild his life. The heroine is the beautiful, dutyful daughter of a man who has no will to live. She has had to take over the running of the castle at a very young age as well as bringing up her younger siblings. She is being courted by an evil man who turns her stomach. When the hero and heroine meet by accident they soon realize thier feelings for each other but know that they cannot act upon them.
I liked the secondary characters more that the major players. I would like to see books with the brother and sister as the leads. I liked the book but just didn't get into it like I thought I would.

A very predictable romance

This book had a great synopsis on the back which pulled me in. But after the first few chapters it got "tiring". About the 4th or 5th time I read about Conners reasons for disliking the King and why he was discraced and sent home from the Holy Lands I no longer cared.
The story starts out showing the stuggle of a young woman who has had to grow up very fast and take on much of the rolls of both mother, father and nurse maid. He father it seems has never recovered from the death of her mother. She is town between doing what she thinks will save her brother and sister from hurt in that she will wed Rennick though he is a huge jerk.
As the story unfolds there is intrigue, attempted overthrow of the King etc...
The problem is there is to much repeat of information, and nothing that really hangs you onto the story I had predicted what was going to happen after the first mention of conspiracy.
I would have to agree with the other reviewer who gave this book 2.5 stars.

Good collection of diagrams

Good collection of diagrams. Works well as an inspirational reference when trying to communicate design ideas. However, could be so much better!! Needs better editing, better writing, and more text explaining the graphics! Not sure that it's worth the money.

About the Author
Myra Schneider is a poet and tutor for The Poetry School in London, UK. She is author of Writing My Way Through Cancer (Jessica Kingsley, 2003) and Writing for Self-Discovery (with John Killick, Element Books, 1998). John Killick has been a teacher and education officer in prisons and more recently has worked with people with dementia. He is a poet and literary journalist.

A Useful and Moving Book

Anyone who has ever found themselves pent up with feelings they could not express should turn to this superb book for help. You may never want to become a writer, just find a way to express, explore, contain, and master your own unresolved experiences, or you may have professional aspirations. This book responds with equal force and usefulness to whatever level of writing sophistication and ambition you bring to it in your own search for expression and relief. That is a very considerable achievement in itself, and alone places this work head and shoulders above its competition. The varied backgrounds of both authors in different areas of teaching, creative work and achievement, and their shared interest in therapy and therapeutic writing, makes possible the unusual range of Writing Your Self.

A key element of the authors' approach are firsthand accounts by Killick and Schneider of bringing difficult material to light and giving it shape, which set the book's direction and show their approach to its subject matter and material. These are enhanced by 21 additional immediate and striking firsthand contributions by others written for this book.

Part I examines the ways many writers, whether famous or modest, like some of the prisoners Killick has worked with, have released their experiences into written self-explorations; Part II reviews a series of well-honed, thought out, and illustrated techniques that move from the simple task of getting in touch with one's feelings to shaping those ultimately, if so moved, into works of art, whether poetry, short or long fiction, or auto-biography. Quoted material from a variety of authors like Elizabeth Bishop or Janet Frame illustrate the immediate subject and add to the firsthand accounts. All major areas of the English speaking world are represented, making the book as relevant and practical in America as in England or in Australia half a world away.

This is also an unexpectedly moving book. As Part I moves from the troubled issues of childhood to old age it evokes the feeling of encountering a single Everyman/woman struggling with the difficulties of the human condition. The last chapter on spirituality in Part I reinforces this sense by dealing with issues that move beyond exploring the self to the wider reality in which we live and find or create answers to the great mysteries of life.

I don't know of any other work that combines these qualities with such success.

Part I starts with childhood, and moves on to: identity, adult relationships, abuse, displacement and disability, illness, mental illness, caring and coping, loss, facing death, and spirituality. In Childhood Maya Angelou's autobiography makes the point writing provides a way to release and shape our need to speak; Mark Doty asks in Identity how "making sustains", for his ability to be a writer and explore his sexual identity in his memoir saved his life; in Illness, Oliver Sacks intuits our living flesh is "solid music" as he explores how he came back to life after an injury, while Miriam Hastings contributes a firsthand account in Mental Illness that points out the simple act of creation is therapeutic in itself. An underlying, profound thought throughout the book is how being able to respond creatively to experience helps makes us well. In the same chapter Clare Shaw in another striking firsthand account speaks of writing so she can know who she is, and that writing of a painful experience gives her control over it for that time. Words are the mirror we hold up to ourselves Penelope Shuttle asserts writing of personal loss, in Loss; in the same section Jocelyn Hurndall reaches a revelation through writing about the death of her son that "What will survive us is love", and is finally able to come to terms with her grief. Barbara Feldt, in Facing Death finds as she wrestles with mortality that "I am pregnant with words": creation, and love, are our deepest responses to death's threat. Mary Macrae's firsthand account in Spirituality explores how poetry allowed her to give voice to the spiritual; Sidney Poitier uses his memoir in part to ask why we are here and why there is anything at all-- and adds that "...when I let the self go ... I ... begin to realize how fully part of this grand scheme I am."

Part II explores techniques to get in touch with your immediate experience, and how to tap your unconscious so you can draw on your mind's fullness. Flow-writing is a particularly useful technique explored here, writing freely on a defined subject or memory or image. Subsequent sections explore the use of memory, how to express feelings in numbers of short but useful ways, then move on to issues of fictionalizing experience to make the otherwise too painful, accessible. The use of dreams and drawings (visualizations) as starting points are explored in turn. The authors explore keeping a journal, how to shape our initial raw, released material into coherent works, and the need, finally, to structure and persevere in the creation of work increasingly long or complex or both. Each element is accompanied by a variety of exercises to help a writer begin.

The authors conclude reminding us they have not tried to explore the nature of selfhood, only the ways many writers of varying qualities and ambitions have sought to explore and express their own. They add that creating the finished work is a process where structure and sense emerge slowly as our creativity finds and expresses itself. The end result allows writers to "transform their personal into the universal"; success in `writing your self' leads us past the self into the wider world we all seek to explore, enjoy, endure, and share with those we love.

Killick and Schneider deserve a wide audience for this work that illumines how we create those stories that heal and bind individuals and communities.

A thoughtful resource for many writers

"Writing Yourself: Transforming Personal Material" is a guide and discussion to transforming one's own personal writing into useful subject matter for multiple uses to the more obvious application of memoir to the more creative applications in mediums such as poetry and novels.
