Great Beginning Reading Comprehension

I happened upon this book at a homeschool book store and I'm so glad that I did. If you like or love the Explode the Code series, then the Beyond the Code books are a great next step. The A,B, and C Explode the Code books introduce the letters and their sounds. They thoroughly reinforce the letter sounds. Then books 1-8 (plus the 1/2 books) reinforce and teach phonics as children begin to read. Explode the Code introduces reading comprehension by helping children connect text to pictures. There are both exercises which reinforce spelling words and other exercises in which children have to identify which sentence is the correct one for the picture given.
I am introducing the Beyond the Code series to my children after they have finished book 2 of the Explode the Code series (which late 1st grade/early 2nd). On the Educators Publishing Services website, this series is recommended for grades 2-4. This series is similar to the Explode the Code books--it has a similar format and approach. The pencil drawings are similar (no color). There is a story, then some yes/no questions, then some logic questions and a rhyming exercise. In this book (book 1), it is the story of Zach the Dog--in several parts.
I can't say that my daughter loves doing this book, but it is very good and I love it because it is a great way to help teach her beginning comprehension. I think that part of the reason she hasn't loved it before was that I started it too early. I put it away for 4 months until later in 1st grade and now we are going to start it again. I'm sure that she will enjoy it a lot more now. One of my daughter's weaknesses is that she really prefers things that are easy for her (don't all of us?) and this book isn't as easy for her as a lot of of her books are.
If Explode the Code is working really well for your child, then Beyond the Code will likely too. I think it is a great series!

Great companion to the Explode the Code series

I purchased this book to use in homeschooling my daughter. As a former elementary school teacher with an M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction, I spend way too much time looking at curriculum, purchasing things to evaluate, and then not using them. This is one we're really using.
Like the Explode the Code books, this book features simple ink drawings. This series is about content, not about appearance.
When I was deciding to purchase this book, I wondered where it would fit in with the series. Although this is Beyond the Code Book 1, it does not line up with Explode the Code Book 1. It fits much more nicely somewhere around the end of EtC Book 2. If your child still needed practice, and you're moving on to Book 2 1/2 instead of 3, I would wait until the end of Book 2 1/2.
This book requires much more extended reading, writing, and thinking than the Explode the Code books -- this is a great thing, but something to be aware of if you have a younger child who is breezing through the EtC books. Beyond the Code often asks children to read two or three pages at once write full sentences, or to answer questions with many possible answers -- "What can keep you from sleep that is not a dog?" "Is a dog a good pet? Why?"
Overall, I am happy with this book. It is not a comprehensive reading curriculum by any means, but a great addition to your program, or a way to supplement a school program. I would recommend it even to families who aren't using Explode the Code, if your children are reading the words, but needing to develop more thinking skills.

We love it!

Both my son and I really love this book and the rest (there are 4 as I type)! My son loves reading a whole story on his own (each story is broken apart into a few paragraphs - one section of the story per lesson), answering and writing simple questions about the story, and doing fun activities (like coloring and drawing). I think he really likes that all the activities are simple - he's using his brain in a different way, but isn't forced to write entire sentences in the first book. He also likes that the yes/no/can't tell questions don't require writing letters - rather, they use smiley/straight/frowny faces - he finds this unique and fun!
I like Beyond the Code because it is exactly what I was looking for - something on his level that teaches him to think about what he's reading instead of just focusing on reading words. My son typically does his "Explode the Code" lesson for the day, and then he gets "Beyond the Code" as a treat! Love it!
