About the Author
Margo DeMello received her Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from U.C. Davis in 1995, and currently teaches at Canisius College in the Anthrozoology Masters program, and at Central New Mexico Community College, teaching sociology, cultural studies, and anthropology.
She is the Program Director for Human-Animal Studies at Animals & Society Institute, and the President of House Rabbit Society. She also volunteers for Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary and Prairie Dog Pals.
Her books include Bodies of Inscription: A Cultural History of the Modern Tattoo Community (Duke University Press 2000), Stories Rabbits Tell: A Natural and Cultural History of a Misunderstood Creature (with Susan Davis, Lantern 2003), Low-Carb Vegetarian (Book Publishing Co. 2004), Why Animals Matter: The Case for Animal Protection (with Erin Williams, Prometheus 2007), The Encyclopedia of Body Adornment (Greenwood 2007), Feet and Footwear (ABC-CLIO 2009), Teaching the Animal: Human-Animal Studies Across the Disciplines (Lantern 2010), Faces Around the World (ABC-CLIO 2012), Animals and Society: An Introduction to Human-Animal Studies (Columbia University Press 2012), and Speaking for Animals: Animal Autobiographical Writing (Routledge 2012). As a university instructor who is a newcomer to Human Animal Studies, I found this book very useful in identifying important sources and pedagogic strategies I'll be able to adapt for use in a new course I'm planning on the topic. The Humanities focus is particularly helpful because very often course syllabi posted on line are within a Social Sciences curriculum. I would welcome an even more detailed discussion of course planning and execution, and further reports about the experience of instructors with differnt student clienteles and in different institutional settings.

Peter s basic premise is that new offshore cruising sailboats are prohibitively expensive and somewhat uncommon, while the market in used cruising sailboats is rich and vast and flourishing. There s something there for everyone. His 45-year experience as a cruiser in nearly a dozen different designs (CCA through modern racing designs) is enlightening. While Peter has formed strong opinions about many features, he does not recommend one design type over another. He knows, perhaps better than most, that every sailboat is a compromise and that priorities and budgets will vary from sailor to sailor. What he offers is a series of observations and a logical review of onboard systems that will help any prospective offshore cruiser consider the pros and cons of each system, feature, and sailboat type. In the end, the reader of Outfitting the Offshore Cruising Sailboat will be able to determine which features are personally important and which have a lower priority. I chuckled occasionally at Peter s dry wit but found that I didn t agree with every word of his sage advice. I m just one sailor, after all, with one set of values and preferences, but I was surprised, for example, to note that Peter overlooked the value of freshwater sailboats, as they apparently do not figure in the experience of this East Coast (and beyond) sailor. Peter starts his discussion of good used boats by ranking the most expensive systems: the rig, the engine, and the ground tackle. As these are the most expensive items to replace, he gives each system a thorough and thoughtful critique based on his experiences as a cruiser. There are many nuggets here for every would-be cruiser. In particular, he includes good tips about good and bad construction features in the rig, bearing in mind intended use for coastal vs. offshore work. This section clearly spells out features to look for if you will be cruising offshore. Over all, Peter offers great advice about buying a good old cruising sailboat and how to refit it for several more decades of offshore cruising adventures. Like the rest of us, Peter has conflicts about the best possible cruising sailboat. After saying that larger is always better, that system redundancy is critically important, and that you should replace practically everything before going offshore, Peter admits that his first cruiser was probably his favorite. A primitively equipped wooden Dickerson, this boat cost only $16,000, had fewer systems to maintain, and was his most affordable cruiser. After telling readers they should probably invest the purchase price of the boat in the refit, and to replace all the important and expensive systems, he reminds us that the first priority is to just go. Time is the enemy, he says, so don t spend your life in endless outfitting. In the end, as in all things, it s up to the reader to make his own choices based on his own list of priorities. But Peter offers great advice that may help each reader rank his own list of priorities and consider some systems and construction methods that he may not have thought about. Our thoughts are that it is VERY in depth and very well put together. If a person is serious about putting together a used boat for extended offshore cruising this is a MUST read. The depth that this book covers would shame most and I use the word MOST surveyors. The best use for this book would probably be for the person who already has this type of boat that would use it as a guide to improve/repair. likely costs of restoring a cruising sailboat. Estimates are a little daunting when added all up but still

much less than a comparable new boat. A valuable corrective for the casual dreamer.

Valuable book

Very thorough and hard-headed analysis of what does and does not stand up to long-term offshore use in the writer's experience. Little good news here for current owners. Example: I thought auxiliary diesels were bulletproof: Nope, they're not made for the long haul. He does like in-mast furling, though. Go figure.

Good solid review

I'm surprised at how easy it is to read and how much I'm learning. I'm not sure if I'm learning new things or just putting a lot of things together in a more organized way of thinking. Either way I have learned enough to make it a good purchase. When you're going offshore you can never be too careful or too prepared. This is helping me get better organized and make better decisions about how I spend my money on the boat. I recommend it.

About the Author
Judith E. Brown is a nutrition researcher, writer and speaker who provides consultation services to the food and pharmaceutical industries, and government health programs. As a Professor Emeritus of the Division of Epidemiology and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Minnesota, she successfully obtained and completed large, competitively funded research grants related to nutrition and health. Her areas of expertise include scientific advising on new product development, advising on product evaluation studies, public speaking to professional groups, consumer-oriented publications on topics specific to health and nutrition, and expert opinion papers on safety and efficacy of nutrients, neutraceuticals, and fortified products. Judy Brown has more than 30 years of instructional experience in the field of nutrition. She has also been involved with writing for several years and has written more than one hundred research articles for publications. She is the author of NUTRITION THROUGH THE LIFE CYCLE, THIRD EDITION (Wadsworth, 2008). An avid researcher and an exceptional writer and teacher, Judith E. Brown is one of the most influential and respected authors in the field.

Janet S Isaacs, PhD, RD, has worked in pediatric nutrition at federal, state and regional level services in 7 different states, and in settings ranging from outpatient to tertiary level inpatient services. Her primary area of specialty and research concerns children with special health care needs and children with inborn errors of metabolism. Currently she is consulting in North Carolina to develop and teach pediatric nutrition online courses to public health employees. Janet earned her Master's of Arts for Teachers from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana College of Arts and Sciences and her PhD from Florida State University Tallahassee, Florida College of Home Economics. She has published in 5 peer-reviewed journals and in 6 books within the last decade.

Bea Krinke, PhD, MPH, RD, LN, currently serves as adjunct instructor at the University of Minnesota, School of Public Health. Her teaching role has included coordinating the field experiences of nutrition students for over 20 years as well as developing and teaching on-campus and distance courses in various courses, including her favorite: Nutrition and Aging. Krinke's education complemented her work. A specialization in dietetics and an internship at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics led to work in hospitals, community programs and a progressive member-owned Health Maintenance Organization, where she coordinated several educational programs, including diabetes education. This HMO experience led Krinke to return to the University of Minnesota to earn an MPH in Nutrition with a credential Nutrition Administration. In 1987, Krinke began teaching at the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health, which prompted her to complete a PhD in Work, Community, and Family Education, specializing in experiential education. Krinke is also the owner of Nutrition Profiles, specializing in recipe analysis, and a member of Slow Food, both of which allow her to satisfy her interests in the cultural aspects of food and nutrition.

Ellen Lechtenberg is the lactation program coordinator at Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. She has been an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant since 1996. She is a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition. Ellen has the unique advantage of using her nutrition knowledge as a lactation consultant. She has a passion for providing human milk for patients with nutritional challenges such as chylothorax and colitis. Ellen presented her fat free human milk project last year at ILCA and won the project poster. One of her career goals is to increase knowledge of dietitians regarding human milk immunology and breastfeeding thus improving lactation duration. She has presented at local, state and national nutrition meetings. Ellen also has experience working at a corporate level with lactation consultants developing breastfeeding policies and protocols as well as lactation education programs for nurses and health care professionals. She has a B.S. degree from University of Nebraska.

Maureen Murtaugh, PhD, RD, is Associate Professor in the Division of Epidemiology at the University of Utah. She enjoys a balance of research and teaching in her current position. She teaches nutrition, including maternal-infant nutrition to medical students and teaches grant writing in a clinical epidemiology program. Her research interests are broad, including the influence of maternal diet on breastfeeding and child outcomes and the influence of diet on the development of chronic disease. Maureen earned her B.S. from Syracuse University; she earned her PhD in Nutritional Sciences with a focus on maternal child nutrition from the University of Connecticut. In 1999 she decided to retool her career with a post-doctoral fellowship in Epidemiology at the University of Minnesota working with investigators in Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention. She pursues a healthy work/life balance by enjoying the mountain west's natural playground.

Not Worth the Price

This book is not as elaborate as the price would have you believe. Many of the charts and graphs are hard to read because they are in grayscale, not full color. This makes it very difficult to read the graph effectively. Additionally, this book is not for someone who wants an in depth look into processes or techniques. In many cases the steps/parts of techniques are given with very little elaboration as to how to carry out those steps or what is included in those steps. There is, however, tons of statistical data and referenced studies.

I needed this book for a college class. Saved money by purchasing on amazon and getting the kindle book for only $9 more is awesome. The kindle version works much better than cafe scribe or brightwave.
