Easy and simple reference

I have used this book frequently for reference and found it handy and easy to understand.

However, I always complement it with Good Word Guide, Usage and Abusage, and The Right Word at the Right Time - A Guide in English Language and How to use It (Reader Digest) for a comprehensive understanding.

The size of the book made it handy for travel reference.

The only shortcoming of this book is that it tend to be rather brief and have fewer examples compared to the other reference books that I used to as complements.

A Great Reference Book for Writers

There are many questions about grammar that a writer encounters. Often those questions are not addressed in the standard writer's reference books. This book has been the mainstay of writers for nearly a century. It has been updated recently to include and reflect computer references and changes in our ever-evolving language. It also indicates differences in American and British English usage, which is great. It's a hefty volume that won't really fit in your pocket, but it is a super reference I recommend every writer have on the shelf and handy.

King Tut

This book is a very interesting story.I would recommend it for 3rd grade and above.The only thing I did not like about it was it did not have a lot of information on king tut.It mostly just had info on Egypt.Other than that I think it was a wonderful book with great vocabulary. The author really described things very well and made me feel like I was there.I loved the pictures with great detail . If you were doing a history report on king Tut or Egypt this book would come in handy.Thank you for reading my review and I hope you decide to read this book.

Great tool for chem

This is one if the most useful texts for solving chemistry equations. It has both even and odd problems clearly worked out, so you can work more problems at the end of the chapters. If you get the wrong answer, you can check here and see where you went wrong. My text is a later edition, but about 90% of the problems are the same. Worth every penny. If you want an A get this.

Sexy and Oh So Sweet Read!!

Rachel Parker loves being a reporter and covering news for the San Francisco Goliath's, not only is she able to live out her dreams in front of the camera, but she is also front and center at every game covering her favorite sport...baseball! Being surrounded by all the handsome players could certainly be viewed as a added bonus by some, but for Rachel, she decided early on to never let her work life mix with her home life. Which seems to be a rather easy rule to follow, that is until after she meets the Goliath's smooth talking star player Bryce Baxter, then she begins to wonder how bad it would be for her to make a one time exception... Being with Bryce outside of her work world would definitely be breaking the rules, and potentially putting her job at risk, but there is just something about him that has her wanting to stray from the straight and narrow. Not realizing though that this one time exception could change the course of her entire life...

To an outsider looking in it would appear that Bryce Baxter seems to have it all, a career that he loves, many accolades under his belt, fame and fortune, and a fancy sports car to boot. But even with all these riches he still feels like there is something missing from his life... a feisty redheaded reporter to be exact. After a few secret hook-ups with her, he can't seem to shake the hold she has over him, and it's starting to effect his game. He knows the only way to get things back on track is to either get over her, or convince her they have something more than just a casual friendship, but she has a rule, and isn't so willing to break it. Just when he thinks it's time to let her go, she shows up on his doorstep with some news that has him wanting to do admit things to her he never thought possible...

This story captured my attention right from the start and had me flying right through the pages, with a dire need to know more, which inevitability had me staying up well past my bedtime just to get my fix! This was my introduction to Ms. Mathews work, and I have to say that it left a very memorable first impression, so much so, that I plan to revisit the series and read the books released prior to this one. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute spent getting acquainted with these wonderfully crafted characters and I highly recommend that you take a chance on them too! It is a highly satisfying read that will melt your heart and having you looking at baseball players in a whole new light... and possibly leave you with the desire to catch a game..or two!!

I really enjoyed this book! You gotta love the sexy, arrogant jocks even though occasionally they are so dense and don't know when they've got a great thing going on. :) Bryce was a fun one to have a love/hate relationship with for awhile there ...

Bryce Baxter should be riding high. He was MVP when his team won the World Series last season and signed the best multi-year contract around. Instead he's in a slump this season and irritated that he can't get a certain lady off his mind.

Rachel Parker has been working hard at getting her sports reporter career off the ground, but got a little closer to a player than she was supposed to. When she shows up to see Bryce with a little problem on her mind, he steps up to aid the situation.

Will they decide their spark and inability to get each other off their minds is enough to build a relationship on?

My Review:
This is another good one in this really good series. Bryce and Rachel have been sleeping together off and on for about a year. When things are going well for him on the diamond, he likes to celebrate with a round in Rachel's bed. Every time, Rachel is determined it will be the last, but then he unleashes that charming smile and she's putty. She can't tell him no. But then something changes...and it's not just Bryce's luck when he's playing the game he loves.

I did really enjoy this one. Bryce and Rachel are in a difficult situation just in that they've never had a relationship before. It was always JUST SEX. They never even went out for dinner before. It's hard to have trust in the relationship with that kind of foundation. Yes, they have chemistry, but sex doesn't fix everything. And it certainly doesn't with these two.

I liked the way the author wrote the story. There is certainly not smooth sailing for these two. They literally have nothing to build a relationship on and as they get further and further into things, that becomes more and more obvious. They don't know how to do the basics of getting along in life with one another. And this thing with Rachel isn't the only pressure that Bryce is having to deal with. With the team coming off a World Series win and with him making a TON of money now, there is a lot of pressure to perform. Pressure that's proving to be too much as he can't get his game to settle into a rhythm.

I liked the way the story was put together with the support story lines that pushed the whole book forward. Although there were times when I wanted to bat both characters upside their heads for being stupid, I did really enjoy the book. I could see so easily why they were both having issues adjusting and it made my heart hurt for them.

And I do love sports books and this one was great because there was a lot of truly great information about the game. Rachel is a reporter for the Goliaths so she and Bryce know the game inside and out. I like books where I feel like I learned a little bit of something more and this was definitely one of those because there are a lot of the intricacies of the game that were explained over the course of the book.

If you like sports book, this is a great series. I recommend it. Note: this is part of a series, but you can easily read each book as a stand-alone.

Focuses on optimizations across the data model, API, server, and user experience

RavenDB High Performance starts off with a quick overview of relational databases, identifying some key shortcomings as well as architectural shifts that have led to the surge of "NoSQL" (Not Only SQL) databases in recent years. That is followed by a short summary of documents (from a NoSQL perspective) and then it jumps right into RavenDB features.

Coming to this book with prior experience in Raven, this was exactly the approach I wanted. I appreciated that it got right into the subject at hand without a lengthy introduction or filler content. I found the writing to be straight-forward without being dry or boring. It was a quick read overall, but the concepts and techniques took time to sink in.

In some ways, I found the book easier to follow than the online RavenDB documentation. While it's not extensive enough to replace the online docs, I found the organization of the book to be more logical and it did a better job of surfacing the core knowledge you'd need day-to-day.

This title covers up through RavenDB version 2.5, which is ahead of what we're using in production. I learned about a handful of helpful, new features including materialized views, SQL reporting, and the streaming API. I also learned about some useful client API features I had never come across before: session.Advanced.LoadStartingWith(...), UniqueConstraintAttribute, temporal versioning, cascade delete bundle, bulk insert, and session.Advanced.Lazily/Eagerly.

After covering data modeling and the client API, the book moves on to performance tuning and monitoring. This highlights the key features in RavenDB where admins can see statistics on each database, monitor performance, and quickly isolate issues within the system.

The book then transitions to scaling out. An entire chapter is devoted to sharding, which helped clear up a lot of unknowns for me. In fact, this was one of the more thorough chapters in the book. It contained numerous code examples and illustrations of different sharding strategies as well as how to define a custom strategy.

While we didn't need to make use of sharding for our project, we did take advantage of replication, which is the focus of the next chapter. It covers the different types of topologies (master-slave, master-master, and multi master), conflict resolution, failover behaviors, failover clustering, and read striping. This is probably the feature I had the most trouble with while implementing the project at work. We tried the master-master topology but ran into serious data issues due to our code implementation. We are now using the master-slave topology. While this chapter doesn't delve into all the intricacies of replication, it highlights the key functionality you need to get up and running.

The following chapter discusses deploying to the cloud. I really wish our project would have taken advantage of Database as a Service (DaaS). I spent a good amount of time updating and maintaining the servers myself, whereas the DaaS vendors described in this chapter handle all that headache for you. At least I know for the future.

The next chapter on extending RavenDB provides an overview of triggers, codecs, and server-side tasks. This chapter is heavy on code examples since it highlights more advanced functionality like custom compression and how to hook into different events within Raven.

The final chapter focuses on improving the user experience, taking advantage of facets, suggestions, search highlighting, and real-time updates with SignalR. Lots of useful code samples here to demonstrate each feature. Unfortunately, technology moving as fast as it does, the section on real-time updates is already out-of-date. SignalR has gone through a major version change and a lot of the code examples won't work as written, so you'll have to research the latest SignalR documentation to spin up your own implementation.

CONCLUSION

As the book states, it is written for people with existing knowledge of RavenDB (some ASP.NET MVC helps too). From that perspective, this is a worthwhile read as it covers the core features with a tight focus on optimization. There is no filler here, just to-the-point explanations with code samples. Aside from the outdated SignalR examples, all the other code samples are functional.

If you're just getting started with RavenDB, I would recommend going through the online tutorials on ravendb.net first and getting the basics down before you tackle this book. While this book is a good reference, it makes assumptions about your knowledge of the system and that could be frustrating to someone brand new to Raven.

Many useful tricks but a bit too short for the topic

This book covers many important things beyond high performance that you should know to use RavenDB properly. The part about modelling your documents and how to handle relations between them has a profound impact on performance, but even more on the maintainability of your application. Even if you don’t care much about high performance you can learn a lot from this book.

If your primary concern is performance then you will find many tricks to squeeze more performance out of the API. Most of them are not part of the official documentation and when only as a comment to a more general topic. The author made a big effort to collect them and gives good examples on how to use those optimisations.

The 124 pages of the book however are not enough for a profound explanation of a topic like high performance. If you can live with that and you are looking for one way to optimize your RavenDB installation this is not a problem. Should you need more or want to know different ways this is not the book you are looking for. Therefore I can give only 4 stars.

The best book on RavenDB that is available currently (but not for absolute beginners!)

This book is a clear win - it's a short but very practical guide to the most crucial aspects of RavenDB. It doesn't describe the basics from scratch, so if you're new to RavenDB you should look for something else. It goes through the most practical scenarios, related to scalability, redundancy and unique scenarios that can be implemented with Raven. I really loved the examples - they are short, but very juicy and they utilize Raven altogether with some other interesting solutions - like SignalR.

To summarize: if you're considering RavenDB for your product / service, give this book a go, it will help you to understand what's Raven capable of.

Excellent book for young readers regardless of gender!

Chase Against Time is a great introduction to the series. The author is a terrific storyteller who balances character with plot to craft a page-turning mystery that speaks to young readers. Chase is given a personal, moral dilemma to work through while at the same time solving the mystery. This book recalls the Henry Wiggen baseball novels by Mark Harris that I read and loved as a high school student. Kudos to Reifman!

AWESOME BOOK!!

I really LOVED this book!!! It is such an awesome mystery.It will have you on the edge of your seat,badly wanting to skip to the end to find out what happens!!! I relate to Chase a little bit because when I grow up I want to be a spy. The title is also a brilliant choice because the boy Chase is trying to find the cello in time, so it's literally a"chase against time", but Chase is also the boy's name, and he's trying to find a stolen cello in a short amount of time so it's kinda like Chase vs Time. A brilliant play on words!!! -SophiaL.

Great book for my 9 year old son

We bought this book because the author had visited my son's school and he got excited about it. Then he read the book and LOVED it. He is actually reading it again now. I hope the author writes more similar books. Thank you!
