About the Author
Shannon Lindsey Blanton is a professor in the Department of Government at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she is also the inaugural dean of the UAB Honors College. She is a past vice provost for undergraduate programs, department chair and undergraduate coordinator, and has served nationally as a facilitator for leadership development in higher education. A graduate of Georgia College (B.A.), the University of Georgia (M.A.), and the University of South Carolina (Ph.D.), she has received numerous research awards and professional recognitions. She has served on a number of editorial boards, including those for four of the discipline's foremost journals: International Studies Quarterly, Foreign Policy Analysis, International Interactions, and International Studies Perspectives. She has published articles on U.S. foreign policy decision-making, with a focus on the determinants and consequences of U.S. arms transfers and foreign aid. Her work has also examined the significance of human rights concerns in global political and economic interactions.

Charles William Kegley is a past president of the International Studies Association, and has been serving the past two decades on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs. Kegley holds the title of Pearce Distinguished Professor of International Relations Emeritus at the University of South Carolina. A graduate of the American University (B.A.) and Syracuse University (Ph.D.) and a Pew Faculty Fellow at Harvard University, Kegley previously served on the faculty at Georgetown University, and has held visiting professorships at the University of Texas, Rutgers University, the People's University of China, and the Institute Universitaire de Hautes �tudes Internationales Et du Developpement in Geneva Switzerland. He is also a recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Foreign Policy Analysis Section of the International Studies Association. A founding partner of Kegley International, Inc. (a publishing, research, and consulting foundation), Kegley has authored more than 50 scholarly books and over 100 articles in journals.

Arnold Bauer grew up on his family's 160-acre farm in Goshen Township in Clay County, Kansas, amidst a land of prairie grass and rich creek-bottom soil. Bauer's was typical of true family farms, where wives supplemented family income by selling butter and eggs and children provided unpaid labor. These hardworking farmers were not particularly heroic or virtuous. They had their debts and doubts; but at the same time their struggles for a kind of moral economy offer valuable lessons that merit our attention today.

Among Bauer's vivid recollections: driving a team of huge, clomping work horses; his father's daybreak call to long days in the field at age 12; and surviving eight years of education in a one-room schoolhouse (with one teacher determined to have all her students learn the harmonica). He shares the trials of Depression and drought, experiences the coming of electricity-which prompted his father to take on a sideline as an electrician-and reveals the vital importance of the local blacksmith. Throughout the book, he finds wonder in the commonplace, like going to town on a Saturday night for a black walnut ice cream cone.

Here is a childhood that few in the United States will ever know. More than that, it is a key to understanding the tragedy that befell the smaller family farms on the Great Plains as sweeping changes after the mid-1950s—falling grain and livestock prices, adverse terms of trade for agricultural products—turned out to be more devastating than tornados or dust storms.

Gracefully written with a keen eye for the telling detail, Time's Shadow eloquently captures the events of an era and the meaning it held for one boy and those around him. It is a refreshingly unsentimental "Little House on the Prairie" that will resonate not only with older compatriots but with anyone whose curiosity leads them to wonder about a world we have lost.

About the Author
Arnold J. Bauer went from his family farm to study in Mexico and Berkeley and to teach Latin American Studies at the University of California at Davis. In 2005 he received the “Order of Merit Gabriela Mistral,” the highest recognition the Chilean government awards for contributions to education and culture. He lives in Davis.

Once a Kansan, Always a Kansan

Bauer's book captures well my own experience of living, albeit briefly, on a family farm in Kansas in the 1950's. His observations of town vs. country ways, the demanding daily work needed to keep the farm going, and the taciturn manner of his own family and that of his relatives and neighbors could be slightly edited to fit the memoirs of thousands who experienced such a life in that time and place. The dominant theme for farm life as he remembers it is the economic self-sufficiency of the farm itself, but along with that went sometimes a sense of loneliness and isolation, especially for young people coming of age in that environment. Despite his background as an academic historian, Bauer writes in a simple, uncluttered, and honest style that conveys feeling without fake emotion or contrivance. He leaves the boring scholarly facts for others to report. I have recommended the book to many friends and relatives, even those whose Kansas memories may be much less rewarding than mine and Bauer's.

Elegy Written in a Kansas Churchyard

It seems note-perfect to me, as if the author was describing family stories that I've heard my from my own Kansas-born father, aunts, and uncles. Mr. Bauer has held up a mirror to us all in describing the lives of farmers rooted so profoundly in one time and place. Beautifully written, unsentimental, and yet moving.

Great Book

Arnold J. Bauer, born in 1931 in northeast rural Kansas, looks back on his childhood more than half a century ago. "Time's Shadow" was picked as one of the year's five best books by the reviewer for "The Atlantic" magazine. And with good reason. Bauer, now emeritus professor of history at University of California Davis, balances the intimacy of a personal story with a broader and well-informed view of a changing rural American landscape now gone forever.

He tells us of nightly trap-setting for muskrats, cold weather or no, and sales of their skins generating his first pre-teen income. He describes his father's work on a 160 acre farm and gradual shift to become the mechanic and engineer benefiting school, church, and neighbors almost without limit. He tells of his older sisters' early escape from farm life, one of whom found a career in the American Foreign Service.

The arrival of rural electric service when Bauer was about age ten brought fundamental change. Near the book's end he tells a bit about a cousin who managed to assemble many small farms into thousands of acres cultivated with modern machinery needing far fewer workers and far fewer farmhouses. A century-long experiment led by German immigrants in the nineteenth century is over.

Arnie Bauer was a student in the first class I taught in Latin American economic history at University of California, Berkeley, in the fall of 1965. We have been friends ever since as he devoted his professional life to understand Chilean rural society. He lives still on Rancho Dos Patos, a few miles west of Davis, California. The excellence of this memoir testifies to his years of combining a sensitive awareness of rural life and its limits and critical analysis of how limits can be overcome and yield the fruits of modern economic development. His own forebears had but limited education and skills; they saw the need and opportunity presented by exceptional children and fostered their own careers (Bauer takes us only through a year at Kansas State, his military service, and GI Bill support that took him to Mexico City College).

It's an American story with all the fine connections to a global vision of how change occurs as challenges seem somehow to be met (traplining those muskrats) and opportunities seized, sometime little more than a child listening and learning from determined mothers and fathers.

great resource

in this multi-ethnic, multi-generational world community, its important to understand how the scriptures are viewed and interpreted from a variety of perspectives. scholarly works like this help facilitate dialogue with God's people everywhere. i am using this work as a resource for the new testament course that i'm teaching this fall (2010).

4/21/11 ...it's sidebars,notes,index and controversial 'perspectives' make it a book that is a more than good 'read'...The book states that the commentators are mostly Theology experts due to the commentators professions as teachers more than preachers....so they 'did good' in their ability to successfully compete well with their other peers, ,each of whom had a book (or books)of the New Testament to comment on....The explanation and commentary on the book of 'Revelations' is extra brilliant.4/21/11 abj

Amazing Inspirational Story

As someone who lived through a family member being diagnosed with breast cancer, this book was inspiration and so truthful. It brings new light to something that is usually seen so negatively. Having a positive outlook is half the battle, Olga has taught me so much through book! Definitely a must read. This book is filled with inspiration.

One summer Wednesday night, a little over a year ago, a woman walked into our Pointe-Claire Toastmasters Club as a guest and instantly changed the aura of the room. Her effervescence, her poise, and her clear blue beautiful eyes radiated strength and confidence and determination that I would come to think of as the `Olga Factor'. That was my first meeting with Olga Munari Assaly.

She had come to practice her skills as a speaker, especially in English, as her mother tongue was French and she was expanding her horizons. Over the months that went by, we learned that Olga was preparing to put out a book about her cancer experience. Since I had my first book published the year before, I was excited for my new friend. If the book was anything like her personality, then for sure it would be dynamic. Being mostly French, Olga solicited the help of Kim Mecca to help her write it. This book reflects Kim as an artist coming into her own as a painter of Olga's story. While it is true that Olga offers a rich palette of colour and experience for which to paint with, Kim's choices of texture, shadow and light, were her own, and she captured Olga essence with mastery. Olga's story is one that anyone facing a hardship should sit down and read in one sitting.

The title, The Joy of Cancer, is as bold and challenging as Olga herself. I can only imagine the certain percentage of people out there that will react to the title with emotions ranging from astonishment to anger. But Olga is unapologetic, and those of you who venture through her story will hopefully understand that it could not have been named anything else. To quote Chuck Swindoll - "Life is 10% of What Happens to Me and 90% of How I React to It" That may be more acceptable than the more vernacular "s*** happens", but both quotes make it quite clear that life has its unexpected turns and if you are not prepared to steer those curves, you may crash and burn before your time. Olga had no intentions of doing so.

As Kim recounts, this woman who had spent most of her life in self-doubt and insecurity took her diagnosis of cancer and spun it around her like a chrysalis, and then emerged as a transformed butterfly.

Those of you, who would contend that the title might have been different if the cancer treatment didn't go well, would be missing the point. It was not the end result that brought the joy, rather the journey of self-discovery Olga yearned for her wings and refused the diagnosis of caterpillar.

She took charge of her treatment and understood that the doctors were wise facilitators of her treatment, not in charge of her destiny.

This is the story of a woman, whom, while still undergoing treatment, walked in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer. Not only did she walk in it, but managed to become the biggest fund raiser for the event. This once self-effacing individual gave the opening address to the event, and then did radio and television appearances, and became a major force in the awareness of breast cancer in Montreal.

This story is well crafted by Kim Mecca, and as she recounts her own personal loss of a friend to the same disease, Olga came along, I believe to give her the chance to honour her friend and Olga at the same time by telling Olga's story with compassion, reverence, and a dash of pride.

While this is a book may seem to be about cancer, it is not. It is about what happens when any major adversity hits you. The decisions you make, the attitude you foster, and your choice to win or lose are all up to you. It is a book about love and family, support. The journey that Olga took, she did not take alone, and her children and husband, Leonard, travelled with her. They all made choices. The right choices can transform you; the wrong ones can slay you. The Joy of Cancer is a book about making the right choices.

Kind of repetitive

This book has some strong ideas and analysis on economic fundamentals, credit and business cycle, macrofundamental forecasting, political influences on business and the economy, the effects of taxation on the long term trend, GNP and the dollar. But you find most of this stuff in the first book by M. Sperandeo, and I really don't see the need for another book on these matters. What's the purpose here? The first one was written about investors and traders, and this one was written about speculators (as their respective titles would suggest)? The big questions remain the same, but what differs is the approach?

On the other hand the 25 pages on options trading alone made this book's price worth paying, at least for me. I wish that M. Sperandeo had written more on options and I hope someday he'll write an entire book on options and futures alone. Now that might really be worth it!

Anyway, Victor Sperandeo remains one of my favorite trading bookwriters. When it comes to combining trading and investment ideas with analysis and presentation simplicity, I still do think that he's one of the best out there.

Great book from a great trader

Mr. Sperandeo's books belong to the classics of trading literature, and yet or perhaps of this, they are not as widely known as they deserve to. They combine a superb research, common sense, and straightforward approach to trading that are far from ubiquitous in the literature that more and more frequently revolves about esoteric nonsense, hype, and self-promotion. Not so in these books, written by a master trader and fund manager with outstanding credentials. Anyone aspiring to successful trading should give these books more than a cursory consideration. There is something for everyone in his books, from beginners to advanced aficionados of trading, so nobody will feel disappointed. Their scope is broader than in many other books on trading, which certainly reflects author's great erudition. His gentle style and numerous personal stories from his trading career guarantee that the books are a pleasure to read. These are books that you may want to revisit time and again to learn more or to get a new perspective on things. There is some overlap between Vic I and Vic II, but definitely not great enough to dismiss Vic II as a rehash of Vic I. I recommend both of them highly to all of my clients and to everyone interested in intelligent, particularly long-term, speculation in the financial markets.

I take issue....

I'd like to comment on 2 things. First of all, Mr. Sperandeo is no joke and he has done all the things he says - He's not just some guy who writes books like a lot of so called "traders" out there. (there are WAY too many to name...!) Secondly, the 'reader' who commented on Mr. Sperandeos lack of formal/university education really has no clue as to what trading is or how it works. Plenty of traders "on the floor" have no extensive schooling. I don't & I traded options on the floor of the Amex (MY $$ - Not a firms) along with many other men who made high 6 figure incomes. Don't be so quick to criticize.
