Not Good as only resource for CTT+ Prep

I've been teaching CTT+, train-the-trainer courses for a few years and my students enjoy a near 100% pass rate. While this book has some interesting information about Training, Instructional Design, and Development, I would NOT recommend this book to help you prepare for the CTT+ test or video. The questions at the end of each chapter do not reflect the types of questions CompTIA asks on the test, as taking the actual test will show. Additionally, I found a lot of "facts" in this book questionable (I couldn't cross-check because there were no footnotes, endnotes, works referenced, bibliography, etc). At the beginning of the book the author recommends making flash cards to study--learning any of these words would be a waste of time for CTT+. Even the style of the book feels like a textbook--not an interactive guide to help you improve training (see Telling Ain't Training put out by ASTD for a GREAT book on training). If you want books on training, find something else (like the one I just mentioned). If you need help with passing the CTT+, search for resources online or take a class (there are no really good CTT prep books out there, unfortunately). This book, for this test, in my opinion, will not prepare you.

Excellent Study Guide for CTT+ Exam!!!!

The CompTIA CTT+ Certified Technical Trainer All-in-One Exam Guide is an excellent resource to becoming a certified technical trainer! I've been a classroom instructor for several years and when this was first introduced to my department I thought that it would all be review of what I already knew. I was very wrong! Joseph Phillips lays everything out clearly for the reader. He is very good at explaining difficult concepts so that they are very easily understood and retained. Every day I catch myself growing into a better facilitator utilizing the knowledge gained by reading this book.
I know that had I not read this exam guide and studied from it, I never would have passed the CTT+ exam! If you follow the author's advice you will have no trouble passing the CTT+ exam yourself!

Awesome Book!!

Love this book! I am over half way finished with it and it has already more than paid for itself. While it is true I could have studied a bunch of "if ... then" scenarios and just regurgitated what I had learned in order to pass the test, I am thankful for the background Mr. Phillips has provided in this book. I will agree that this book may be wordy at times and goes beyond the objective of simply passing the CTT+ exam, although I would be ashamed to call myself a Certified Technical Trainer while never being introduced to some of the topics contained in this book such as the ADDIE methodology and Kirkpatrick evaluations.

Hilarious motorcycle gang rom com!

When I read this story was about outlaw biker gangs I never thought it would prove to be such a fun read - it is, quite simply, hilarious! Ok, so some parts are sort of scary, but the reactions of the heroine, Minerva Coolidge (aka Minnie), are brilliant and had me laughing out loud for much of the story. Minnie’s family head a Californian biker gang but she wants to leave all that behind and become a super model and she’s doing the best to ensure she gets there, even if that means running away from home. Unfortunately she was unaware that a rival biker gang are out to get her. When they try to kidnap her from the airport she proves she’s a feisty lady and no pushover. Helped by Big Mike, she manages to escape but then discovers that he’s been sent by her brother with instructions to put her on the next available flight back home but they hadn’t bargained for her stubborn determination to make her dreams come true. She isn’t just good looking, she’s resilient, independent and a force to be reckoned with - as all the men involved are about to find out!

Minnie is a brilliant character, so funny and smart that she easily outwits the men around her in the most hilarious ways, even though she may be scared. Big Mike initially totally underestimates Minnie but his attitude changes as he endeavours to cope with her resourcefulness and inventiveness. The couple face trouble every way they turn, some self imposed, more from rival gangs, more kidnapping attempts, danger and death but her crazy innovations and, of course, the romance, make this an easy, fun read that I’ll be laughing about for some time to come - and I can't wait to read any sequels! No hesitation - my recommendation is go get yourself a copy of this delightful book to immerse yourself in.

Fun, original and quirky

This is the second adventure in the Big Mike and Minnie series, although this is the intro to our strange and lovable pair of main characters. Just like the first, it's a fun, quirky, story told with wit and skill. Kelly's imagination shines throughout, as does her writing skill. Minnie is a model determined to make it in New York, her outlaw biker family want her back home. She's tough, resourceful, smart, and a helluva risk-taker, thanks to her very unconventional background. Big Mike is... big. He's tough. Black ops tough. How they end up in a relationship is a romp, in the truest sense of the word. If you want a well-written romance with lots of action, wit, humor and originality, you owe it to yourself to meet Big Mike and Minnie.

Witty and charming; an excellent read.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Initially, this novel peaked my interest because the plot seemed witty, and I just happened to be in the mood for a romance. I must say this book did not disappoint. On the Run is exactly what I expected it to be: humorous and adorable.

Big Mike is a tough guy who has had his fair share of fights, and Minnie is an ambitious model who is trying to avoid her biker family upbringing being revealed to the fashion community. When Minnie’s brother, Crash, asks Big Mike to look after Minnie in the midst of a turf war between Minnie’s family’s biker gang and another rival gang, things start to get interesting. I was slightly skeptical in the first few chapters whether these two were going to mesh together well—which is part of what makes this novel so charming. These clashing characters butt heads and drive each other crazy, but they grow on the reader as well as on each other. I would call it an interesting twist on the classic Romeo and Juliet storyline.

Personally, I felt a little at odds with how the book’s perspective changes from chapter to chapter. I appreciated being able to see how Big Mike’s opinion of Minnie morphed as the story progressed (and vice versa), but at the same time it was difficult to tell at the beginning of some chapters who’s view I was seeing the world from.

About the Author

An Academic Approach to Innovation Building

The author takes too long to make his point and uses early expedition analogies, which are mostly abstract achievements, in comparison with modern boardroom challenges. The examples of how-to go about innovation are cluttered with a textbook approach, set mostly in a listed company $ billion environment, which I believe is way beyond the small enterprise entrepreneur who would be looking to find ideas in this book.

Must buy

I read dozens of business books each year and this was a genuine surprise. It's a quick and fun read with case studies based on interesting stories that anyone can identify with. Don't go through it too quickly, however, because each case study presents a series of unique ideas that you can translate directly to your research, business, or whatever the task may be. It challenges you to change the way you (and your team) think. It's been very helpful in my work. At the very least it's a great book with incredible (true) stories. Highly recommend!

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, R.N., Ph.D., taking the needs of nursing and other allied health students into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy & physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. This experience, along with continual feedback from health care professionals (including generations of former students taught by Dr. Marieb), has inspired the unique perspective and accessibility for which this book is known.

Dr. Marieb’s commitment to students extends beyond teaching and writing. Recognizing the challenges students face, Dr. Marieb contributes to the New Directions Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time. She also funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College (which promotes research by undergraduate science majors) and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Mount Holyoke’s Clapp Laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, Dr. Marieb also underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology� CD-ROM series. This text—Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology, Tenth Edition–is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of the students pursuing the study of A&P.

When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the board of directors of the famed Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center of Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

Somewhat catches up on the previous 1992 edition, but ESSENTIALS is the key word

This is not half as thick as the Anatomy & Physiology textbook I own from 1992, which is titled "Human Anatomy & Physiology" by the same author. This version is the updated "ESSENTIALS". It does not go into near as much depth and detail, but that is probably due to the incredible amount of knowledge that has deluged the field in the ensuing 20 years. I expect 1st year student are expected to grasp ONLY the 'essentials' before delving into a specialty. Sad really... and I can only hope it really DOES catch up on what I've missed in the last 2 decades.

Anatomy even a 60 year old can understand

This is required reading for a class I'm taking. The content is well organized. Language is friendly. Easy-to-understand illustrations and tables. Helpful self-tests and summaries are included with each chapter. The companion online module, Mastering A&P, is fantastic. There are a lot of planned redundancies between all the study aids, which I really appreciate; they help me identify what's most important.

Masterpiece of western literature

Siddhartha is both a western and eastern tale. Though it was written by a westerner, it has the soul and power of an ancient eastern myth. It is at once a timeless story and one that the reader will wish to continually revisit at different phases in his or her life.

Hesse does a remarkable job in capturing the tone, cadence and moral complexity of ancient Indian religious stories. His "revisionist" take on the life of Buddha is at once fresh and familiar to anyone who has read the sermons of the Buddha or who has studied ancient Hinduism and Buddhism. The themes of self-doubt, denial, asceticism and spiritual rejuvenation are both profoundly and cleverly handled in Hesse's superb narrative. In many ways, this is a book that serves as a summation, and improvement on, all of the religious texts one has read. The fictional aspect allows Hesse to interweave common literary devices, such as heroic journeys and coming-of-age revelations, to make the text, as a whole, much stronger and more impacting than a dry sermon.

Siddhartha's narrative works as a cycle, with each chapter offering commentary on the vices and victories of mankind and the ultimate futility of the material world. Like the river that Siddhartha comes to love, the book flows, and never missteps or hesitates in reaching remarkable insights into the nature and philosophy of humanity.

This is a book that will stay with the reader for a lifetime. Its simple structure belies a greater complexity; be sure that this book leaves the reader with no easy answers, but it is sure to inspire thought and joy.

*A note on translations:
-For readability, flow and consistency, I find the Joachim Neugroschel translation to be the best of the many options. It never feels forced or awkward and the introduction by Ralph Freedman is also a wonderful asset to understanding the importance of the story. Neugroschel seems to best capture the ebbing German of Hesse's original, while also capturing the tone of an Indian sermon.
-The Sherab Chodzin Kohn translation is also well-done, though I find it slightly overstated in certain parts.
-The oldest translation, by Hilda Rosner, is the most commonly available version, though I find it to be clunky, awkward and halting. Avoid it, if possible.
-A newer translation by Susan Bernofsky has received good reviews, but I have yet to read it.
-Finally, two low-grade translations by Applebaum and Edwards should be avoided.

Handsome Edition Fun Addition to Your Library

Maybe I'm a bit slow on the uptake, but when I first saw the Drop Cap series I was confused about what the point was. In case you're wondering too, it's a handsome way to organize your library--yes, your physical library (you'll notice no digital edition here.) And the assumption is to choose books that every reader would want in their library. Now that I get it, it's a clever idea well executed.

That said, I have some doubts about some of the Penguin choices for letters, but NOT for this book. Siddhartha is one of many favorite books of all time. I have read or listened to it at least three times. Happily, Penguin has chosen an excellent translation, which flows well, is consistent, lyrical, and gets the wisdom of Hesse's words. I haven't read all the translations, but I'm happy to report Joachim Neugroschel's as an excellent one.

So if you're looking to organize your library in a fun way or don't own a copy of Siddhartha, this is an excellent edition to get. And if not this edition, if you haven't already, do yourself a favor and read Siddhartha.

great if you're in the mood for a mid-life crisis

Seriously, if you're gonna read Siddhartha, this is certainly the edition to get -- the slightly oversized Penguin Classics one.

It features a useful (35-page!) introduction by Ralph Freedman, which includes suggestions for further reading.

The translation by Joachim Neugroschel -- a new one -- also reads swiftly and naturally.

There are no footnotes for the text itself, however.
