Berenice A. Carroll is Director of the Women's Studies Program and Professor of Political Science at Purdue University and Professor Emerita at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her books and articles include Design for Total War: Arms and Economics in the Third Reich; Liberating Women's History: Theoretical and Critical Essays; "The Politics of `Originality': Women and the Class System of the Intellect"; and "Christine de Pizan and the Origins of Peace Theory."

Hilda L Smith is Professor of History at the University of Cincinnati. About the Author
Joan Saslow is the author of a number of textbook series for adults and young adults, including "Ready to Go," "Workplace Plus," and "Literacy Plus," She was also the Series Director of "True Colors: An EFL Course for Real Communication," and of "True Voices," an EFL video course. Ms. Saslow's special interest is in distinguishing the needs of the EFL and ESL learner and creating materials appropriate for each. Ms. Saslow has taught in Chile and the United States in a variety of programs, including binational centers, academic programs, intensive language programs, and workplace programs. Ms. Saslow has been an editor, a teacher-trainer, a language learner, and a frequent speaker at gatherings of English teachers throughout the world. Allen Ascher, formerly Director of the International English Language Institute at Hunter College, has been a teacher, teacher-trainer, author, and publisher. He has taught in language and teacher-training programs in both China and the United States. Mr. Ascher has an MA in Applied Linguistics from Ohio University. Mr. Ascher is author of "Think About Editing: A Grammar Editing Guide for ESL Writers," As a publisher, he played a key role in the creation of some of the most widely used materials for adults. SECOND EDITION is the text for IACA certification - new edition do in 2014

As a new edition is in the early stages of production it is important to note that this review is of the Exploring Crime Analysis Second Edition. It is the study text for the International Association of Crime Analysis (IACA) certification exam to become a Certified Law Enforcement Analyst (CLEA). This edition text is in the early stages of a major rewrite. The new edition should be in publication by the end of 2014. If you are looking to take the test of this year there may be some changes in how the test is written and I am not sure that there are any plans to offer it at any other meetings this year (Sept. 2013). It is possible to take the test by computer. This can be done by making arrangements through your Human Relations division.

Exploring Crime Analysis is a collection of 20 readings, each authored by one or more selected editors. Editors were selected as area experts. Topics attempt cover every special skill a working crime analyst may need to employ. Every chapter has a corresponding section on the test. Chapters such as creating crime analysis documents and making presentations may feel lightweight even if the style can be academic. In the chapters on qualitative, quantitative, and inferential statistics, the reader will traverse from basic concepts to advanced and demanding methods of applied mathematics. This contributes to an uneven feel to the book. Parenthetically, crime analysts working in sheriff's offices and police departments may find an aggressive disinterest in internally created documents that include advanced statistics.

People come into the field of crime analysis with varied educational backgrounds. Those who have been in the field for more than a few years may have no college experience. It is now possible to get advanced degrees before your first day on the job. Most of this book reads like a graduate school text. There is a tendency among many of the contributors to begin their topics by explaining and giving examples and failing to be as clear when introducing more advanced topics where there is a greater need of longer explanations and specific examples. Some items are repeated (there are at least three or four definitions given for inductive and deductive reasoning) while other items are presented without any clarification. There are some specific instructions on the use of so-called "em" dashes, "en" dashes and hyphens; however only the keyboard location of the hyphen is given (it's the minus key).

The IACA purposes in producing Exploring Crime Analysis appear to be: firstly to ensure that all crime analysts have a single place to seek out instructions on what can be a sprawling demand for skills; secondly to ensure that CLEA is a document awarded on merit and a meaningful statement about the skill sets the holder can be expected to exhibit.

In summation Exploring Crime Analysis second edition is an excellent resource book for the practicing or student crime analyst. I hesitate to recommend it as your first crime analysis book and sincerely hope it is not your last. If you are not sure about becoming a crime analyst your openness to, if not enthusiasm about learning the skills in this book speaks definitively to your future as an analyst. If you are working as a crime analyst this book is a resource that can remind you of the breath of tools that should be in use in your department.

I give Max Lucado a couple of stars for artistically using the language to paint a mental picture and make a point -- a simplistic point, over and over and over. If you want to share a devotional with an elementary-age child or group, especially during Lent, this book (like most of Lucado's stuff) is good for that. Don't expect any theological insights, just some pretty word weaving.

Many layers

This is a great classic! Children and adults have loved this book as it has many layers and meanings. I love reading it over and over, always getting something new and different each time. I think everyone can enjoy this book; kids and adults. The meaning one retrieves from this classic depends on what path or where one is on their individual journey in life.

A Trip Down The Rabbit Hole All Grown Up

There is one thing that all potential customers must keep in mind when buying any Alice book: Do not purchase one that does not include the illustrations of John Tenniel! This edition includes all of them and the quality of the reproductions on the pages are excellent. Tenniel's illustrations help add to the childish excitement of Carroll's stories and will be especially invaluable to teenagers and adults, having just by nature of growing up lost some of the imaginative innocence, that ability to stretch reality, that we all possessed as kids.

Of course, the illustrations wouldn't mean jack if they didn't have a captivating story to work with. Carroll's amusing tale of nonsense is targeted as a kid's book, and that is always where many of our fondest memories of it will remain, but as a college student reading it I was amazed by its power to suspend reality and return me to a level of imagination that I had simply thought I lost somewhere along the way. The trip down the rabbit hole can be quite a different experience from a different point of view.

This particular edition also includes a good introduction and very helpful explanatory notes organized chapter by chapter. The introduction and notes offer insights to Carroll's life and his relations with the real life Alice and her family that, from a student viewpoint, reveal an interesting and more personal side of the Alice tales.

Well, hello Dali! I see that you have met Alice.

In 1969 Random House produced a limited run of Alice in Wonderland with 12 wild and colorful heliogravures by surrealist artist Salvador Dali. They issued 2500 standard editions and 500 deluxe editions of the book, charging $375 retail for the standard edition. Copies of the standard edition in good condition now sell for thousands of dollars.

This edition reproduces the original Lewis Carroll text with nice reproductions of the Dali illustrations at a price everyone can afford. The additional material by Carrollian expert Mark Burstein and by a mathematician friend of Dali, Thomas Banchoff, add to the value of owning this edition of Alice no matter how many other versions you may already have.
