Misleading title. Completely useless for actually building an electric bicycle.
By Jesse Gunn
Things the book told me:
- What an electric bicycle is. It is a bicycle powered by an electric motor.
- There are commercially available ones. Kits, or fully assembled.
- What an electric motor is. It uses magnets and electrical energy to make itself turn. There are a few different types!
- What a battery is. It is a device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. There are a few different types!
- There are advantages and disadvantages to using a lot or a few batteries. If you use a lot of batteries, your bike will be very heavy and accelerate slower than if you had used few batteries. But it will go further, too!
Great, but what I *WOULD* like to know is how to hook up an electric motor to a bicycle. That would be really helpful. I read on to page 70. I read on to page 120. I read on to page 170. Onto 240.
This is "BUILD your own electric bicycle," and there is not a single practical example of this in the book! There are a few non close up black and white photos of completed builds he copied and pasted from Google Image, and that's it, he didn't post any custom plans, he didn't search for any custom plans to share. He doesn't even get into the basics, like, how do you hook up a motor but retain the ability to pedal? How do you allow the motor to freewheel when coasting is faster than the motor is turning?
Oh, he tells you there are hub motors that you can install easily. How lovely, but I want to know how to use plentiful and cheap brushed electric motors, not go out and spend several hundred dollars for what is an expensive pre-made solution, and the only way to accomplish this is with a chain or a belt.
Yes, there are friction drives, essentially just wheels jammed on your bike tire, but they destroy your tire and burn up your battery in the process, plus you can just watch a 60 second youtube video to learn how to do that, that is, if you don't want a quality build that will actually hold up. I bought this book hoping for some better information than that!
It's like the author compiled every remotely related subject and factoid, but ultimately it's all useless without showing us the step-by-step process of building a bike (he did not have any pictures or diagrams at all of any process, or any part involved in the process) I would have been happy if he had just showed us some blueprints or plans! How hard would that have been to find or make? There are plenty of very detailed guides online available, but it's hard to find quality blueprints or designs you can take to a machine shop to have made for you. I thought maybe since this was an actual book somebody went to the effort to put together and profit off of, surely it would be better than the forums and free articles. No, it is far worse! Far far worse.
Do not buy this hoping to learn how to build an electric bike. You will be better off searching forums for free info on how to do that.

Can be better
By Rick
First off, I'm new to bicycling and especially electric bicycles. So I'm very novice. I recently became convinced that electric bikes were the way to go for alternate transportation and I wanted to know more, so I picked up this book hoping for a thorough explanation of electric bikes and a start-to-finish guide on how to build one. This isn't that sort of book. In my opinion, one would need to be well versed in bikes, batteries, and electricity before picking up the book. I found myself glossing over the sections having to do with battery design and electrical components. The author is an engineer and I dare say the book is better suited for someone with that sort of mechanical aptitude. Perhaps a "Dummies Book of Electric Bicycles" would have been a better choice for me.
For a person with little understanding of electrical concepts/components, or battery design, the book would be better if it laid out the basic concepts first, and then described how to build a basic electric bike step-by-step, slowly building on the basic concepts along the way, and describing in detail the components used and why. Then add the advanced topics at the end.
Another sticking point for me was the quality of the images. Most are of poor quality and I often struggled to make out what was being described. The images either need to be in color, or be of higher quality - or both.
I think this book could become a bible of electric bicycle building and troubleshooting - in time. The author certainly has the know-how to make it so, and I hope to see future editions that reach out to a wider audience. The subject is worth the effort.

Electronic Geeks Proves He Knows Nothing About Bicycles
By AlohaCyclist
Matthew Slinn may be an engineer who knows about batteries, but his bicycle knowledge is lacking. To quote from his book, "In a wet environment, rim brakes will be next to useless". I guess in the entire history of the Tour de France, none of the racers have been able to stop their bikes in the rain because they never use disc brakes.
He claims that your maximum speed on a bike with 20-inch wheels, a "60T cog on the front" and a "12T cog on the back" is 20mph. Thus, one could conclude that the maximum cadence (pedal rpm) is 66. That's the cadence of a beginning bike rider, not experienced cyclists who are more likely to ride at a cadence of 80-100. He also claims that with 26-inch wheels and the highest gearing, the maximum speed is 30mph. Tell that to Mark Cavendish whose sprints are closer to 50mph than 30mph.
His knowledge of folding bikes is pathetic. "Smaller wheels reduce ride stability." "The folding bicycle is not a stable platform for high speed performance, so you should select [electrical] components for a maximum speed of 20 mph." Tell that to owners of Bike Fridays (I'm one of them) who ride their folding bikes at speeds of over 40mph when cruising downhill when pedaling 1,200 miles down the west coast. To make a folding bike more stable, he states, "You can make the bicycle more stable by swapping the handlebars over from a normal bicycle." His idea of how to make a folding bike fit better: "If you are tall, then you can make the seating position bearable by extending the seat to maximum and lowering the handlebars to the minimum."
A logical flow to the narrative is totally lacking. Right after discussing brakes, he jumps to soldering. After he talks about securing batteries to the bicycle, he brings up choosing a bicycle frame.
There are many good books on bicycle wheel building. This isn't one of them. He has a picture of a rear wheel with all of the spokes on the non-cassette side of the hub coming out of the inside of the hub and all of the spokes on the other side coming out of the outside of the hub.
There is only a pair of paragraphs which talk about electric motors driving a chain. The rest of the book focuses solely on hub motors. If you want to know about batteries, capacitors, and hub motors, this is the book for you. If you want to have a working electric bicycle, look elsewhere.
