About the Author
Professor Wolfgang DemtrAder studied physics and mathematics, and received his PhD degree in 1961 from the University of Bonn. After working as an assistant professor and researcher at the University of Freiburg until 1967, he went as a visiting fellow to JILA in Boulder, Colorado. In 1970 he accepted a post as full professor at the newly founded University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he still works. Professor DemtrAder was awarded the Max-Born-Award of the English and German Physical Society in 1995. He is the author of about 150 scientific papers and several books.

every kid can learn to read

The Blue book and Gold book (headway program) were a popular curriculum in the 70s and 80s. It taught phonics. By returning to past curriculum(s) that worked, we can go back to all kids learning to read. I use four books to bring kids up to high school level. The Blue and Gold books headway program, breaking the code (based on Blue and Gold book style) takes the kid to 5th grade level, then finish with Rewards by Sopris West which takes the kid to 10th grade level with speed and proficiency. Four books to move from total non-reader to proficient high school level. Not only amazing...but repeatable.

Rewards: ISBN-13: 978-1570352720

Breaking the Code and Rewards have newer editions but I am not sure if they are as good as the original.
The blue and gold book are out of print...watch for $20 to $30 used copies.
Rewards at sopris west has updated to a range of books but I have not tried them.

These are the four books I use. One hour per day takes about 4 weeks per book: 16 weeks to proficient readers.
In a Saturday moring program, you can do 4 chapters. It would take between 5 and 6 Saturdays for each book.
I have taken many 12th grade (even special ed) nonreaders through these programs. It works.

The headway program is no longer in print, and even used books are not to be found.
The copyright has expired.

I wish open court or some other publisher would reprint these, but until then use the online copy.

THE book for high end aducation

We are fortunate that old teacher told us about this book. This book was published before American education system lowered the standard... last two times. My 5 y.o. son actually reading NEW and unknown words mostly correctly being though just 1st half of it.
In addition to the book we re-write each new word from the book 5 times, and write a sentence with it.

Only $52.13 and Little Bill will be famous forever

Little Bill has an interesting plan in "Money Troubles," another Little Bill Book for Beginning Readers by Bill Cosby. His teacher has explained about the Oort Cloud that exists beyond the orbit of Pluto and how one day a comet will emerge from the cloud and travel through space toward the sun. Little Bill has decided that he is going to discover that comet and have it named Comet Little Bill after himself so he can become famous. The only problem is that Little Bill needs a telescope to be able to discover a new comet and it costs $100. Knowing his parents will never give him that much money, Little Bill is coming to have to get the money himself. When he checks his football bank, he discovers he is only $52.13 away from becoming famous.
Little Bill does a pretty good job of finding jobs that someone his age can do, although along the way he learns that some people have even better reasons for wanting to make money than being famous. Of course, there is a point where Little Bill gets ahead of himself and tries to take advantage of a situation, which explains why he looks so different at the end of the book from how he starts out. Ironically, "Money Troubles" does end up with Little Bill becoming famous. As Dr.Alvin F. Poussaint points out in his introductory letter to parents, one of the main lessons of this book for beginning readers is that working brings money. Little Bill shows some of the things the children can do to earn money through jobs outside the family. However, the other lesson is that other people may need money more than we do.
The idea of Cosby's Little Bill books is to affirm the value of friendships and family relationships while encouraging children to solve problems fairly and creatively. But as this particular story shows, the famous comedian is also interested in modeling positive behavior for young children as well. I know how everybody used to applaud Cosby's "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids" for its educational value, but I really think these Little Bill books are much more impressive. As always, the story is illustrated by Varnette P. Honeywood.

Realistic, honest, humane-- Excellent !

My kids (girls, 7 & 8) have recently fallen in love with the Little Bill books. But this one is a special discovery. The realistic approach to the subjects of money, want, need, being poor, to give or not to give, are dealt with so succinctly in this little book. All three of us were moved by the events as they unfolded. Thought-provoking and challenging for kids AND their parents!

My school was cosponsoring a bookdrive for underserved children in the community. I knew that this book, along with all of the other Little Bill Books, would be a great addition to any home. This book is valuable for the young and old.

About the Author

Barbara Alpern Engel is Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is the author of Mothers and Daughters: Women of the Intelligentsia in Nineteenth Century Russia; Between the Fields and the City: Women, Work and Family in Russia; Women in Russia: 1700-2000; and Breaking the Ties that Bound: The Politics of Marital Strife in Late Imperial Russia.

Janet Martin is Professor Emerita of History at the University of Miami. She is the author of Treasure of the Land of Darkness: the Fur Trade and its Significance for Medieval Russia and Medieval Russia, 980-1584.

No time for tomes? Read this and you'll better understand Russia. This short book has an amazing amount of information.

This is another volume in a new series from Oxford UP, short reads (this one is 126 pages) that are well written. I think it's a bit less Russia in world history than simply a fine history of Russia. This is really an achievement, a readable history in so short a book on such a large complex place. The histories of Russia I've read in the past tend to be many hundreds of pages. This book would be a good place to start for someone with an interest in Russia but no time for tomes.

The several maps are reasonably good, and the few photos and other illustrations are useful for mood. I think the best chapters are Chapter 1, on the formation of Russia; Chapter 2 on the rise of Muscovy and the Mongol yoke; Chapter 4 on the Petrine revolution (that is, Peter the Great); Chapter 6 on reform and revolt (covers 1855-1905); and Chapter 7 which covers the 1905-45 period, particularly the ruthlessness of the communist regime. The last chapter is too brief, but a good summary of how the Soviet Union collapsed and Russia remains
