A parallel volume is written to the Australian Standard for Concrete Structures AS3600-2009.

The text runs from an introduction to the fundamentals to in-depth treatments of more advanced topics in modern prestressed concrete structures. It suits senior undergraduate and graduate students and also practising engineers who want comprehensive introduction to the design of prestressed concrete structures. It retains the clear and concise explanations and the easy-to-read style of the first edition, but the content has been extensively re-organised and considerably expanded and updated. New chapters cover design procedures, actions and loads; prestressing systems and construction requirements; connections and detailing; and design concepts for prestressed concrete bridges. The topic of serviceability is developed extensively throughout.

All the authors have been researching and teaching the behaviour and design of prestressed concrete structures for over thirty-five years and the proposed new edition of the book reflects this wealth of experience. The work has also gained much from Professor Gilbert active and long-time involvement in the development of standards for concrete buildings and concrete bridges.

Raymond Ian Gilbert is Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at The University of New South Wales, UK, and Deputy Director of the UNSW Centre for Infrastructure Engineering and Safety, Australia. His books, ‘Structural Analysis: Principles, Methods and Modelling’ and ‘Time-Dependent Behaviour of Concrete Structures’ were also published by CRC Press.

Neil Colin Mickleborough is Professor of Civil Engineering and the Director of the Center for Engineering Education Innovation at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, China.

About the Author
Michael Prager has been involved with music technology for more than 15 years and has worked for such organizations as Guitar Center Management, Cakewalk, Steinberg, Disney Interactive, Spectrasonics, Q Up Arts, Sony Classical audioMIDI.com, the Columbia College Hollywood, and Keyboard Magazine. Prager has worked on various Course Technology instructional DVDs and is the author of several books and CD-ROMs from Cengage/Course Technology, including Reason 4 Power!, Reason CSi Starter, Reason CSi Master, and Sampling and Soft Synth Power!.

G. W. Childs IV has not only published several books on Reason (Reason 7 Power, Going Pro with Reason), Ableton Live (Going Pro with Ableton Live) and sound design (Creating Music and Sound for Video Games), but he was also a sound designer on Reason itself. He's also had a highly successful career in designing sounds for games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: The Sith Lords, Star Wars: Battlefront, and more. Geared towards Beginners, and missing entire chapter on ReDrum

While this books says it's aimed at Beginners to Advanced users, I would say Intermediate and Advanced users will gain little from this title.

The book is quite thorough, though, with specific examples on a lot of the major aspects of Reason 6. But, one sentence has thrown me off a bit, page 32: "Notice the Redrum Drum Computer appears within the Rack (see Figure 2.5)! For more information on using Redrum, see the chapter about Redrum in Reason 6 Power!" Looking at the index, there is but one entry on Redrum, and that's "Redrum/drum pattern tutorial, 92-102. " That's the only reference to redrum, with no dedicated chapter as indicated, which left me scratching my head a little.

As far as most of the text, I can't help but think while I'm reading this: is this the Reason 6:Ignite book that is written specifically for beginners? I don't know for sure, because I haven't read Ignite.

The reason I give it 3 stars is that, even though most of the material covered is helpful and useful for the most part, sentences like this from chapter 1, p. 21, "There are actually more uses for Sends and Returns, but I'll leave those for you to discover on your own," make me yearn for more. That 'more' was the reason I bought the book in the first place!

Having said all that, I would recommend you "Click to Look Inside" to get a taste of it and decide for yourself.

Where's The Content?

I took a chance and ordered this book thinking that the missing Redrum chapter that a previous reviewer wrote about was a fluke. Well, it wasn't. Not only does this book have no chapter on Redrum, it also has no chapters on Subtractor or the Matrix pattern sequencer, two of my favorite devices!

My guess is that either the authors or the publishers decided to put out a book showcasing the new features of Reason 6, plus throw a few other things in. This most certainly is not a "comprehensive guide," as the cover of the book reads.

Thank goodness I have Reason 4 Power, which is an excellent book, to fill me in on the missing chapters of Reason 6 Power. I think I'm going to toss Reason 6 Power in the trash and read the 1,000+ page Reason Operator's Manual.

Worst Book I Have Read!

As a reviewer previously stated... This book is geared entirely for beginners as it basically gives the reader a synopsis of what each element of the program can do. There is not much on the creative wiring of the reverse of the rack. There is no chapter on either ReDrum or the Mclass elements. And to top it off when I am told to go to website for additional information, the book isn't even there! What a waste of my hard earned cash!

I'm in love with all the "Usborne Big Book of"s. The pages are sturdy, the fold out pages are huge, they are FULL of cool examples of trucks, ships, trains, etc., and everything is clearly labeled making a parents' job of answering the never ending "what's that?" actually accurate. These are my favorite kids' books and my kids love looking at them as well.

Wonderful book! I saw this at my son's school book fair and wanted to buy it for him for Christmas. Such a great educational book for truck lovers. He uses it now but there is so much information that I know he will still like it when he is older. I also have the bi book of machines.

Growers and Medical Users take notice:

This book tells you how to concentrate active ingredients from Cannabis, and how to modify them to improve their potency.
The instructions given are distilled from technical writings, which are cited. These technical journals may be hard to come by, since the articles are often old (but valid).
D. Gold tells you exactly how to prepare Cannabis extracts and preparations using readily available kitchen pots and pans and a few chemistry set novelties. He also describes a larger set-up utilizing a 55 gallon drum.
I myself have never gotten around to trying the techniques described in the book because I smoke a small quantity of good Cannabis that I pay a high price for. Smoking unrefined Cannabis is good enough for me. I would have to make modest investments to implement Gold's methods. I can spend that on Cannabis instead.
I think Gold's methods would be great for someone who has access to large quantities of Cannabis at a low price. I have never understood why people smuggle low quality Cannabis across international borders. Bootleggers distilled their fermented corn mash into a potent form before loading it into the trunks of their cars. I think the penalties for bunk weed aren't much different than those for hash oil, so it seems irrational to smuggle garbage.
I think this book would be good for Cannabis cultivators who have a lot of low potency leaves to dispose of. Perhaps they could convert these into high quality products. They should experiment at small scale to see if it justifies the costs. Heating fuel is expended, some solvents may not be fully recycled. Yield efficiency may be below 100%.
I think this information would also be useful for people seeking information on medical marijuana. Perhaps a person with a serious need for purified Cannabis extracts would be willing to go to the trouble of preparing extracts.
Of course, nothing in the book or in this review should be construed as encouraging you to do anything illegal. Perhaps you should consider moving to Antarctica or the Netherlands if you find D. Gold's methods interesting.

AAN EXCELLENT WEALTH OF INFORMATION, BUT......

This book deals with the process of turning regular everyday herb into both hash oil and hashish. It is very detailed and practical. As such it is geared only to those interested in undertaking such a process. The process Gold describes in it DOES WORK and the potency increaces between 6 times (for pure crude extract) and 32 times (for acetated and isomerized extract) are in the opinion of this author accurate.
As helpful as this book is however, it is incomplete without its compendium: Dr. ATomic's Marijuana Multiplier.The reason for this is that unless the reader is a chemist, Canabis Alchemy is very difficult to follow. Even thought the diagrams in it are well illustrated, understanding some of the simple alchemy reactions described in them is very difficult to the lay person - if not impossible.This is where Dr. Atomic's Marijuana Multiplier comes in. It is akin to an Idiots Guide to Canabis Alchemy. Its chapter layout is almost identical to Canabis ALchemy. Best of all, it's written in a cartioonish fashion with words that the reader can easily follow (instead of chemical symbols). It even describes how to make the edible fomrs of hash that really work!
As mentioned above, when read together the process mentioned in both books works and a reader (with basic HS education) can figure out how to go about the 28 hour alchemy / isomerization process to obtain very potent oil / hash with a potency of about 6 to 12 times stronger on the Adams scale than regular everyday Mary Jane! As simple as the process is however, it is unlikely that a non-chemist could make the very high acetate rotaional herb oil (13 to 32 times more potent) that Gold explains in his book. This is because this final step involves an artificial atmosphere to be created behind a blast proof plexi glass cage. I would not recommend this to anyone who does not have a ton of experience in chemistry labs.
Finally, the process described in both books results in a yeild (by vloume) of between 25%-30% of extracted THC / pulp canabidiol from regular Mary Jane. In other words, 10 grams of herb would give you between 2.5 and 3 grams of consumable decadence. As for the supplies needed, almost all the ones mentioned in both books can be acquired pretty easily. The only drawback is that the entire process is VERY labor intensive. For some really incredible smoke expect about 30 hours of pretty well continous work. The benefits are the increase in potency, the far less toxins ingested and some incredible bragging right :)

Forget about acetate extraction!

Even though this book is somewhat good it certainly does not increase potency. In Chapter 1 alone the author is telling the grower to preheat cannabis in an oven so it crumbles easier. This only destroys some of the much need cannabinoids that you want. Just dry your harvest in a dark room away from any light and you will be able to crumble up your cannabis is no time. Then following this the author starts to describe how cannabis should be pounded into powder. Sorry but this book is supposed to be about high quality cannabinoid extraction and it does not really serve anybody with this kind of interest... but it will tell you have to extract THC from cannabis... or at least some of it!
What the author neglects to tell you is that it is very important to begin with the right genetics. If you have a plant that produces below average potent buds then no matter what you do you will only end up with average potent cannabis oil. This book is alright I supposed because it will get you there but I highly recommend The Cannabis Grow Bible by Greg Green for better information on cannabis oil extraction using butane (a very simple and safe process) or by water extraction to produce full melt hashish. The acetate extraction method described in this book is now somewhat obsolete. I just use the acetate process in cleaning out my butane extraction instruments for oil residue. The full melt water extraction technique is the way to go though. That is the true extraction method of the pros.

In the stunning opener, gambler Ricky Smith takes a swan dive from a burning balcony into a pool as the Riverboat Casino in Vegas goes up in flames. Smith gets up, walks across the street to the Mint and proceeds to win a cool million, never losing a hand. The odds say no one's that lucky. Tony Valentine, head of Grift Sense, a gambling consulting company, gets called in to find out exactly how Ricky cheated, so the casino doesn't have to pay. For his fifth outing (Sucker Bet, etc.), Swain presents his 63-year-old retired cop with his most involved mystery yet. Readers gain expected info on chip scams, while the plot goes delightfully over the top like Agatha Christie at her wildest, with gypsies, drug cartels and one piece of misdirection after another (not least that dive from the balcony). Occasional preachiness interrupts the action, as Tony explains how awful killing bad guys makes you feel--but he still keeps shooting them in the head. The narrative nails gambling cold, noting that televised poker has convinced millions they know how to play: "Professionals had a name for these new players. They called them suckers."

James Swain's "Mr. Lucky" is a cleverly written, highly entertaining mystery that grabs attention from the first page and doesn't let go. Ricky Smith is the perpetual loser who uncannily strikes it rich, not just once but repeatedly, cleaning up in Vegas at Black Jack, craps, roulette, and even poker, taking a Vegas casino for a cool one-million in a single crazy night. But Smith's luck doesn't stop, as he picks a $50-grand scratch-off sweapstakes ticket and wins the annual charity raffle in hometown Slippery Rock, North Carolina. Suspecting they've been swindled, the casino hires Tony Valentine, former Atlantic City casino cop and expert in gambling scams and cons. Swain, who in real life is in fact an authority in the ways casinos can be swindled, spins a fascinating story that is as revealing as it is fun. Swain's prose is refreshing free of self-importance, breezing through the pages with an unencumbered confidence and dark humor that is easy to take. Put your feet up, sit back and enjoy Swain's guided tour through Vegas casinos and Mississippi river boat gambling barges, of hookers and Carolina hillbillies and redneck thugs, while the cagey Tony Valentine unravels "Mr. Lucky's" sudden streak of good fortune. Fiction at its finest, this was my first James Swain/Tony Valentine novel - it surely won't be my last.

This is a Winner!!

This was my first experience with Mr. Swain's writing and his central character, Tony Valentine. It won't be my last. In fact I have already ordered all of his previous novels and if that isn't an indication of how talented this writer is as a story teller, than I don't know what is. Mr. Lucky is a book you read just for it's sheer entertainment value. Ricky Smith, a loser all of his life, has just won $20,000 gambling in Las Vegas. He has brought a georgeous babe up to his room to celebrate. She has her own ideas of celebration and tries to slip him a Mickey which he catches her at. In the midst of throwing her out of his room, he discovers the hotel on the Vegas strip is on fire. There is no escape for Ricky except to jump from his balcony. His luck continues and he survives the fall and then goes on one of the most remarkable gambling streaks that has ever been seen in Las Vegas. It is almost too good to be true, which is exactly what the casino owners in Vegas believe and his million or so dollars in winnings are held up pending an investigation. Enter Tony Valentine, owner of Grift Sense, a gambling consulting company and one of the most knowledgeable men on the face of the earth concerning scams that people try to perpetrate on casinos. Tony sets out to try and explain how such a streak of luck is a con and while he is doing it, Ricky continues his streak winning a lottery drawing and picking three winners in a horse race to show his luck is still holding.

Checking Ricky out takes Tony to Slippery Rock, NC, Ricky's sleepy home town and it takes his son on a trip to Mississippi where Ricky has bested one of the top poker players in the world in a game of Texas Hold 'Em. Their investigations follow their own courses as they probe deeper into how one man can be so lucky and that is all you really need to know right now, except to say that you will get an education concerning the darker side of the gambling industry and be totally engrossed in the story and it's many characters until at last the truth is discovered.

I bought this book on a hunch that I would like it based on the revews I had seen. That was a lucky on my part and you can get it on it too. It's a winner!!

Best of Series

In series novels there comes a time when the writer either makes or breaks. This novel is IT and if you have been following the Tony Valentine series and are considering this book - BUY IT. This is fast paced, action, wit, and just enough of the "Gizmo" (dishonest gambling) to keep you reading all night.

The dual plot (Tony and Jerry) is well developed and could be a little more interrelated, but Jerry finally becomes more than a cardboard cut out. In this novel he is in contact with his father learning the family casino detective trade by way of trial and error and with some long distance help from dad while Tony is concerned with the main plot. Enough is said in other reviews concerning the role of "Mr. Lucky" and it is a shame to tell much, but the implications of big cheating is big money and bigger schemes and Swain plays this well.

The added attraction in this novel is the consideration, not in any preaching fashion, but reflectively of the moral and ethical implications of actions: is it proper to simply cut an addicted gambler loose, what is the role of the community in developing a gambling culture, what harm comes to innocents? And in a modern society, how does all this lead to violence? Swain does not preach, but like Tony he knows cause and effect. Come to think of it, logical analysis is very much in the center of his writing.

About the Author
Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society, or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the newly opened program in criminal justice at the State University of New York at Albany, earning both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. After completing his graduate work, Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University and has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, and in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell (UML). Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach courses on criminology and criminal justice in UML'S online master's degree program. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, corrections, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court-certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

Brandon C. Welsh is an Associate Professor in the College of Criminal Justice at Northeastern University as well as a Senior Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement at Free University in Amsterdam. His research interests focus on the prevention of crime and delinquency and evidence-based crime policy. Dr. Welsh has published extensively in these areas and is an author or editor of seven books. Born in Canada, he received his undergraduate and M.A. degrees at the University of Ottawa and his Ph.D. from Cambridge University in England.
