Peter Sluglett is the foremost political historian of modern Iraq and noted
media-commentator worldwide. He is Professor of Middle Eastern History at
the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. The late Marion Farouk-Sluglett
lived in Iraq between 1955 and 1963, and taught Middle Eastern Politics at
universities in Britain and the United States.

One of the first books you need to read to understand Iraq

Iraq Since 1958 is considered one of the "standards" of Iraqi history books. There are only a few others that have attained this level, books by Tripp and Marr are also in this category. This book, as well as the others just mentioned are the best places to start. They provide the broad framework and context of modern Iraqi history that is essential for understanding more specific issues, such as sectarianian splits within the country, as well as regional problems with countries like Turkey and Iran.

The book intensely covers the years 1958-1979 along with a chapter on the British monarchy and also a short chapter devoted to both the war with Iran and the ivasion of Kuwait. 1958 stands as one of the most crucial years of Iraq with the overthrow of the British monarchy. An in-depth study beginning with this year and moving forward to the crucial decade of the 60s is the best way to understand how the Ba'th party and Saddam were able to take control of the country.

One of the most striking features of the book is the fact that the authors are very bold in their denunciation of the Ba'th party and its methods. Although one would be hard pressed to find someone actively arguing to the contrary, a high degree of ideological boldness permeates the chapters dealing with Ba'th party rule. Hook for the Series Now

This book pulls you in right from the beginning. Yes it is the second book in the series. Which most people will then say it picks up so fast because its for the fans. However, these books at least the this one and the first are or could be read as 2 separated stories. That can be a really nice thing for those who want to get in to the series but only have a chance to read them out of order.

The chapters in the book are not to long at all. Being a faster reader you could finish this book quite fast. Others may take a bit more time, however it should still not take much more time then other readers. I also have not come across any hard vocabulary words that would stop someone from reading or enjoying the story line.

However, this is a book about a young girl in her 20s and her struggle with not only her fresh, new relationship with a young boy also in his 20s but who does not believe in the paranormal and her secret paranormal ability. So you can see a conflict there. But when they decide to take a week long trip out of the city (where it is much easier to block out the voices) to get some work done for their classes. She is met with a choice to except her roll and power and help those souls that are trapped and their love ones to move on or to keep it all hidden so her boyfriend does not think she is crazed or worse leave her forever.

Personally, I love stories like this. I enjoy the paranormal very much, I even watch much of it on TV. But there is something about reading it that takes me deeper in to it. Yes, it is a bit cliche' with the internal battle of excepting the power and letting the world know or hiding it forever to just seem normal and live a normal life, what ever that may mean.

Ghosts in The Park!

The second in Calloway's Southern Ghosts series, Ticket To Die takes place in an abandoned amusement park located in the fictional town of Abandon, Alabama. Everything about this town, from the park called Zephyr Land to the Abandon Inn, which is really just an old house, seems haunted.
Well ok, more than just "seems", but only certain "gifted" individuals really know this.
One of these folks is Amanda, a connoisseur of carousels, who has accompanied her boyfriend Jake to study the older ones there. She is then to write a research paper on how this carousel could be improved that she hopes will get her an apprenticeship.
Meanwhile Jake, a rising engineer, hopes to study the construction of the roller coasters.
Only they both quickly discover that something has gone horribly wrong, probably intentionally, that led to several deaths. The voices from beyond spend most of the remaining story trying to convince Amanda to help them get justice, while Amanda tries to convince Jake that she is not insane.
First, the degree to which the coasters and carousel are described is amazing. I'll definitely never look at coasters quite the same again. And I hope people always build with the highest quality parts.
Also, this story features a colorful cast of characters, from the old woman who runs the hotel, and her husband who fancies himself reenacting the role of Confederate general, to a heartbreakingly cute set of twin 5-year-old girls. One of the central characters debuted in the first book of this series, and while it isn't strictly necessary to have read that, some of his references will make more sense if you have done.
Overall, this was a compelling read. I always find it interesting to examine the inner workings of Southern culture and the many and varied people who reside therein. So do not be alarmed by the vandalized sign, "die?" "ride?" same difference. Go ahead and get in line! And enjoy this bit of summer time.

About the Author

Ramalingam Shanmugam is the Editor-in-Chief for the journals: Advances in Life Sciences and Health, International Journal of Research in Medical Sciences, and Global Journal of Research and Review. He is the Book-Review Editor of the Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation. He directed Statistics Consulting Center in the Mississippi State University. He served the Argonne National Lab., University of Colorado, University of South Alabama and the Indian Statistical Institute. He has published 120 research articles and is a fellow of the International Statistical Institute. Currently, he is a professor in the School of Health Administration, Texas State University. He is a recipient of several research awards from the Texas State University.

Rajan Chattamvelli has worked as an Analyst Specialist at Denver Public Health and was a visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Management. He was Chair of the Department of Computer Applications at Presidency College and Periyar Maniammai University, India.

Citizen Youth: culture, activism, and agency in a neoliberal era� goes to the heart of these contradictions, exploring the dilemmas and cultural dynamics of being young and politically engaged. Through an ethnographic study of young people working on activist causes across the three largest urban centres in one of the wealthiest nations in the world (Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, Canada), this book draws on Bourdieusian cultural sociology, feminist theories of agency, phenomenology, and political theories of the state and neoliberalism to understand what it means to be a certain kind of youth citizen in the twenty-first century. Accessibly written yet theoretically engaged, the book will be of interest to individuals both within academia and in the wider world of social movements and youth engagement.
