Victorian Women, by Joan Perkin

While the aristocratic women of the Victorian age have long preoccupied the popular imagination, seldom have women of other classes been granted a voice. Victorian Women is the first book to allow women of all classes to render their own lives, in their own words, from birth to old age, in the long nineteenth century between the French Revolution and the First World War.

In letters, memoirs, and other contemporary sources these women describe their childhood and education; courtship, marriage and homemaking; sex and motherhood; marital breakdown; widowhood; and their pastimes and entertainments. Their voices, heretofore drowned by the cacophony of louder, often male versions of history, speak to us with clarity and poignancy, revealing strength of feeling, courage, and humor. We find in this book the unmarried woman worker, the single mother, the prostitute, as well as those who fought for professional recognition against the regiments of the church, government, and law.

Review

"A useful and engaging book, one in which real voices are allowed to speak and to describe experience as being as squalid, muddled, painful and interesting as it generally is."

-Sunday Times

"On individual examples Perkin is superb, not just on the great reformers but on the individual free-wheelers like Isabella Bird-Bishop, who set off at 40 to see the whole world and managed it."

-The Independent

Absolutely Fascinating Account of Victorian Women
By Vicki Hopkins
Utterly fascinating. For someone who writes historical romance, the life and times of Victorian Women is a total eye opener. What I find unique about this book is that it contains actual written statements from women who lived during that time period. They talk of their feelings, ignorance, longings, lifestyle, relationships, etc. The information about sex, courtship, and marriage was shocking from one end of the spectrum to another. Astonishing. Well worth the read if you're curious about women of that era. I highly recommend it for any writer looking to write romance in that time period.

I purchased a used version that was a former library copy. It's a bit worn, but that's fine because I'm highlighting large portions to use as reference.

And even longer to go...
By J. Hilles
This is a reasoned and scholarly approach to women's history in a specific place and time without being too scholarly and narrow.
Perkin covers the span of Victorian England in time, place, and class.
The tone is measured, even while delivering facts sure to outrage - it was perfectly acceptable in the country fairs for a man to sell his wife and well within the law for a man to claim every cent his wife earned.
Perkin's concluding chapter shows how far women came in one country, in one century, but is ever mindful of the suffering it took to achieve it.

Good intro
By Andrea S. Browning
I appreciated the breadth of the topic discussed, but I was hoping for more info I suppose. The author says in the intro that the book isn't for scholars, so I really can't complain. As I was reading through, I kept wishing there was a timeline to go with it since she discusses topics thematically rather than chronologically and I was hoping to connect the dots in a different way than presented. I definitely learned a lot from the book and I hope to learn even more from others that go more in depth into the topic.

good text with innovative presentation
By A Customer
This excellent book is one of the best introductory philosophy textbooks I have ever reviewed. The book has technically correct, nuanced positions and an ample supply of primary source excerpts. The author also provides a unique emphasis on the contemporary practical relevance of philosophy.Having resumed my teaching career after a long absence,I have found recently that students generally have a much less extensive background in humanities, history, and literature than in years past.Students come to us (in the philosophy profession) with very few,if any, reference points with regard to future philosophy studies.
It has become much harder to teach 100 level courses exclusively from primary source material.Furthermore,it has become harder to "sell" the value of philosophy to beginning students. The author writes in an engaging style and "makes the case" that philosophy is intrinsically valuable. The professor no longer needs to strategize in terms of justifying the course. With the increasing emphasis in university teaching on multiculturalism and
cultural diversity, the author provides substantial coverage of Native North American,Asian, and feminist perspectives. The author supplies the student with several study guides, progress checks, and goal questions based on the SQ3R method of learning. The book is supported by a companion website.
If I would have to mention one minor criticism, the author does certain things that I tell the students not to do in formal papers:refer to oneself as "I",refer to the reader as "you",use contractions, and address the reader using imperative statements and/or rhetorical questions.I understand why this might be done in an introductory text, but I am thinking it might be hard to tell the students not to do certain things that the textbook author himself does.Other than that one issue,I found the book to be a wonderful read.I definitely plan to use this book as the major text in a future INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY class.

Respectful of larger, technologically advanced boats, he expresses a particular enthusiasm for the smaller boats and their unique personalities and challenges. Robert, a retired dentist, from the San Francisco Bay Area now lives with his wife, Jeanne, in the mountains near Yosemite. Black Feathers, berthed in San Francisco, is always anxious for her next adventure. JEANNE CRAWFORD, is NOT a sailor, and never will be. She experienced the TransPac adventure from the support person's perspective-on dry land. Providing continual support to Robert, as well as event planning expertise to the TransPac Race Committee, Jeanne immersed herself in the race. In doing so, she gained a new family and relates her adventure though a non-sailors' perspective. Always an ardent writer, she enjoyed weaving the various aspects of this book together. Jeanne retired from Intel Corporation in Folsom, CA in December 2005 after a varied career that included serving as an event coordinator for the Towe Auto Museum, as well as the owner-

Black Feathers
By Michael William Farrell
This is a very careful and intelligent approach to a particular method of ocean racing. I feel qualified to share my opinion of this book by Robert and Jeanne Crawford because I have sailed and raced 100,000 miles in the Pacific, Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and the South China Sea. Four Pacific crossings including the Pacific Cup Doublehanded Race in 1988. I cast an Ocean Racer's eye on this account and it comes up right. I especially like the description of the events and ambition that led up to the decision to sail in the 2008 Singlehanded Trans Pac. The personal interaction between Robert, his family and the other competitors is insightful and sensitive. Never boastful or sensational , a delightful account with the right mix of detail and personal recall of events make this book a joy to read. Included are nuts and bolts appendices applicable to any such voyage. Any who has ever sailed will enjoy this book and everyone else will find it a superb adventure story. It's required reading for any novice or experienced sailor who contemplates a voyage, singlehanded or crewed on a big ocean.

Black Feathers is a Great Read
By Tinker
After sailing this weekend in the IYC DH Lightship, the skipper I was sailing with mentioned that there was a book about Black Feathers, I immediately went on Amazon and ordered a copy. I've seen this Cal 20 in the S.F. South Beach Marina and taken a close look at all the equipment setup for ocean racing.

Black Feathers, A Pocket Racer Sails the Singlehanded Transpac is a great read. The detailed accounts of high emotions and reasoning behind what is needed to achieve the accomplishment of completing the SSS Transpac were especially interesting to me. The specific details about what is needed for a small boat to be equipped properly for this type of voyage will be of use to me now and in the future.

My compliments to Robert and Jeanne Crawford for compiling this book. The people in Oregon with the large Cal 20 fleet weren't the only people interested in your story. I'm glad that there was a list of small boats that have competed in the SSS Transpac over the years that included my Wilderness 21. The reading of this book has give me new inspiration to consider what would be needed for my boat Tinker to compete in this event.

Thanks again to Robert for this great book. I recommend anyone seriously interested in the Singlehanded Sailing Society or Transpac should pick up a copy.

Black Feathers' trip to Hawaii
By kjcpdx
Even though I'm not a sailor, this book is fascinating. I really felt like I was on the boat during the first part of the book, which tells about the trip. I doubt the part about how to rig your boat for sea travel will make much sense to me, but I bought a copy for my neighbor who is interested in fixing up his boat for sea travel. He can't wait to get started on it. Kay

The Age of Confucian Rule: The Song Transformation of China (History of Imperial China), by Dieter Kuhn

Just over a thousand years ago, the Song dynasty emerged as the most advanced civilization on earth. Within two centuries, China was home to nearly half of all humankind. In this concise history, we learn why the inventiveness of this era has been favorably compared with the European Renaissance, which in many ways the Song transformation surpassed.

With the chaotic dissolution of the Tang dynasty, the old aristocratic families vanished. A new class of scholar-officials―products of a meritocratic examination system―took up the task of reshaping Chinese tradition by adapting the precepts of Confucianism to a rapidly changing world. Through fiscal reforms, these elites liberalized the economy, eased the tax burden, and put paper money into circulation. Their redesigned capitals buzzed with traders, while the education system offered advancement to talented men of modest means. Their rationalist approach led to inventions in printing, shipbuilding, weaving, ceramics manufacture, mining, and agriculture. With a realist’s eye, they studied the natural world and applied their observations in art and science. And with the souls of diplomats, they chose peace over war with the aggressors on their borders. Yet persistent military threats from these nomadic tribes―which the Chinese scorned as their cultural inferiors―redefined China’s understanding of its place in the world and solidified a sense of what it meant to be Chinese.

The Age of Confucian Rule is an essential introduction to this transformative era. “A scholar should congratulate himself that he has been born in such a time” (Zhao Ruyu, 1194).

Review
One of the leading historians of the Song period offers an empirically rich and well-informed book that is especially good on material culture and the history of technology. Kuhn offers strong overviews of the transformation of the capital cities, education and examination, commerce, and the Song fiscal system, as well as lively discussions of religious beliefs, the study of natural phenomena, and private life in the public sphere. For readers who want an in-depth look at mid-imperial Chinese history and culture, Dieter Kuhn's Age of Confucian Rule promises to become the book of choice. (Paul Jakov Smith, Haverford College)

The first four chapters of this well-researched, clearly written book present a balanced synopsis of the political, institutional, and military history of Song and its neighbors during some three centuries, when this was 'the most advanced civilization on earth.' The remaining eight chapters deal with thought, life cycle rituals, poetry and painting, education and the examination system, dynastic capitals, the world of production, money and taxation, private lives, and the public sphere. The author's enthusiasm is matched by his erudition and outstanding expertise in Song material culture as he ranges widely from the plethora of goods for sale in bustling shops and markets to the origins of foot binding, and finds space for dental hygiene as well as tomb construction...Scholars already versed in the period can learn much from this book, while those just beginning to delve into Chinese history are very well served. (C. Schirokauer Choice 2010-02-01)

[An] admirable account of the Song dynasty...This series on China, brilliantly overseen by Timothy Brook, is a credit to Harvard University Press. Above all, it encourages us to think of China in different ways. (Jonathan Mirsky Literary Review 2010-11-01)

One hopes [Kuhn's] work will find a larger audience, for he has much to teach to general readers, world historians, and China specialists alike. (Mark Halperin American Historical Review 2010-06-01)

The Age of Confucian Rule is a book that everyone who teaches Chinese history should have on his or her shelf and consult frequently...The attention [Kuhn] gives material culture is refreshing and helps him to make his case for the importance of China in Song times. (Patricia Ebrey International Journal of Asian Studies 2010-08-01)

Nice Overview of the Song Dynasty
By Eleanor
This is a very nice overview of the Song dynasty. It's comprehensive yet concise. The book begins with a historical overview and then proceeds thematically. The chapters are:

1. A Time of Turmoil
2. Model Rulers
3. Reforming into Collapse
4. The Song in the South
5. Three Doctrines
6. Education and Examination
7. Life Cycle Rituals
8. Exploring the World Within and Without
9. Transforming the Capitals
10. A Changing World of Production
11. Money and Taxes
12. Private Lives in the Public Sphere
Conclusion

Chapter 7 has an interesting discussion of the education of women and women's property rights. Chapter 8 has a nice overview of Song dynasty literature, scroll paintings and scientific developments. The book has black and white photos of scroll paintings, diagrams of Buddhist temples, and makes good use of maps. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly.

When Confucianism ruled
By kkbs
This fourth volume of HUP's History of Imperial China focuses on the Song Dynasty between the 10th and the 13th century, a period during which Confucianism (re-)gained its role as a government doctrine in China. Contrasting its European contemporary societies, this also implied government by officials, who were primarily chosen because of (certain) merits, versus feudal governments chosing their officials through parentage.
The book outlines the many technological and commercial developments in China during this period, as money paper (including inflation) was introduced, trade was boosted and the infrastructure was improved. On the other hand, the Song Dynasty was constantly fighting against its Northern neighbours, the Khitan Liao and the Jurchen Jin dynasties, while the latter even pushed the Song out of their Chinese heartland and established a border along the Huai River in 1126. Nevertheless, until the Mongol invasion in 1279 the Southern Song recovered and established a different China, focussing much more on the South and its traditions.
In his set up of the book, the author Dieter Kuhn follows the example of the previous three volumes, written by Mark E. Lewis, starting with a rather short summary (90 pages) of the political history, followed by chapters on religion and philosophy, the system of recruiting officials, arts and science, the capitals, and economy and government finances.
The main text of roughly 280 pages is accompanied by maps (there could be more) and explanatory images, and followed by dynastic tables of the Song and their counter-dynasties in the North, as well as a 30 pages bibiography.
Again this volume is written well and gives an interesting overview of the period. Recommendable for all interested in Chinese history.

Most fascinating book in the series so far
By Laoshi
Before I read this book, the Song Dynasty for me was one of the least interesting dynasties. However, after reading it, I want to read more about the Song. The author knows so much about this period in Chinese history and he does such an effective job at describing it and analyzing. I noticed that the sources for this book uses more original sources written in Chinese. I have read the previous books in this series and was never as curious about the dynasties that they covered as I was about this one. This is a credit to the scholarly research, passion, and knowledge of this author. I have not had a chance to read the rest of the series due to their price being out of my range.

I do have one problem with this book and that is the writing style of the author. I am an ESL writing teacher and I teach students to write in the American rhetorical style with the main idea at the beginning of the paragraph followed by supporting details. However, the paragraphs rarely follow this structure and it makes it really frustrating to read at times. Most paragraphs start out with one idea and end with a completely different idea. It is instead written using European paragraph structure in which the topic statement is "cleverly" hidden, non-existent or comes toward the end of the paragraph. In contrast, the previous books in this series are written by an American who writes in the American rhetorical style, and they are very clear and easy to read. I actually have thought about bringing in some of these two writers' paragraphs as examples of how to write and how not to write a paragraph. I wish this book had been better edited to suit an English speaking audience.
