Amazing communication with a human spirit! Enlightening!

This book is short but gets right to the point -- a group interaction, through the author, with a human spirit who was known to one of the group members before his passing. As questions are asked and answered, it is easy to sense and visualize what is transpiring in the spirit world. Direct and honest, this book is an eye-opener if ever there was one. Highly recommended, and a very quick and easy read.

For the man who was so connected to his inner self and to the spiritual around him, Kenny Loggins to this day is still discovering his Tao and that idea of never stop "listening to the songs that are playing in our heads," is, perhaps, his greatest gift to us. After reading Kenny Loggins book, The Unimaginable Life, It was obvious he had underwent a major shift in his awareness to the innerconnectiveness, truth, and love of the universal divine love. Through his music he was able to demonstrate these new principles. With the release of the album "Leap of Faith" in 1991, Loggins brought forth his joy of this awakening and desired to share the incredible sense of love and belonging he had discovered. Even though by his own admission, his music had always had a deep spiritualness to it, it was with this album that he knew he was awakened to it and truly felt it. He was singing from his soul. He was singing an universal truth that has been here since the beginning of time. With Leap of Faith, his music took on a new higher level of spiritualness that reminded me of the same type of awareness that is in Zen and in Taoism. The principles of Truth, Love, and the Innerconnectiveness is essentially the same with Kenny Loggins as with Lao Tzu. Let's take a look at Kenny Loggins music from a Zen perspective. According to Osho, "Zen is like a telegram. It believes in the very essentials. It has no nonsense around it, no rituals, no chanting, no mantras, no scriptures- just small anecdotes. If you have the right awareness, they hit you directly in the heart. It is a very condensed and crystallized teaching, but it needs the person to be prepared for it. And the only preparation is meditative awareness. Zen and the Tao are very fragmentary, like telegrams, urgent, immediate, not giving you any explanation, but simply giving you the very essence, the perfume of thousand of flowers. You just have to be alert enough to absorb them. I'm trying to give a context, the right background, because I am talking to people who are not born in the Zen-Taoist tradition." Examples of these "telegrams" are throughout the lyrics of Loggins music. Like "Conviction of the Heart," this is a song that I believe that Lao Tzu could have written if he were alive today. This "telegram" drives home the very essence of the message with crystal clarity, "With any Conviction of the Heart, One with the earth, with the sky, One with everything in life, I believe that we'll survive, If we only try..."

Is Kenny Loggins a musical guru?

I have been a student of the Tao for over 20 years. I have heard the Kenny Loggins songs played on the radio over and over. I never realized until reading this wonderful book how closely Kenny Loggins let the Tao come through his music. Waller brings a sense of newness to lyrics people have loved for years. Many musicians will attest that their lyrics come from their soul, but as Waller points out, Loggins' music carries with it a great sense of spiritual awareness. Song writers often try to convey a sense of the spiritual through lyrics, but it is difficult to do so with honesty and without seeming too pretentious. Keeping with the connectedness of the Tao, it was only by Waller's spiritual awareness that he could have been able to discern the spiritual depth of Loggins' lyrics that most other people take on a superficial level. A very interesting insertion in this book is where Waller compiled Loggins' lyrics into a collection that he has divided into chapters corresponding to the Tao Te Ching, calling the collection The Tao of Kenny Loggins. Waller brings creativity and insight into a part of mainstream culture that has heretofore gone unnoticed. I will never listen to a Kenny Loggins song the same way again and I am glad that I now have another dimension to my personal, spiritual journey.

Profoundly poignant and inspirational

I had developed a fascination with the eastern philosophies and teachings, as I was at a crossroads and had been searching for something deeper and more meaningful in life. This is why I found myself searching this topic on kindle in the first place. I came across Dennis Waller's inspirational works - the translations of Hsin Hsin Ming and Nagarjunas Tree of Wisdom, and this too has been equally as inspirational. I hadn't heard of Kenny Loggins before reading this, but now I am hooked. I have now heard some of his music and really feel I can connect with it on a deeper level, and I really feel as though I "get" it, which is a wonderful feeling.

The 81 versus of The Tao of Kenny Loggins chapter are simply awe-inspiring, and the Love Story at the end really epitomizes what it's all about at its core. "An essay on the importance of Tao" explains the true meanings of Love, Truth, Equanimity and Innerconnectiveness of Life. The story "You Reap What You Sow" is profoundly poignant.

The perspectives of George Carlin (in the first chapter) are so very insightful, every one of them. So many people these days are disenfranchised with life. We are so busy scurrying around, stressed out of our minds, making a lot of noise and trying so hard, but not really achieving anything. Our values are meaningless, selfish and petty (all aimed at satisfying our egos), and we look at things the wrong way around. We just can't see the wood for the trees.

Certainly, this type of philosophy on life is not for everybody, but the more people who share and practice this philosophy, the better, brighter and fuller the world will be for it. For that reason, I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to make this one-and-only life we lead rich, full and divine, by eliminating the ego and deeply absorbing these messages into your inner being, and adopting the simple principles and thought-patterns explained in detail in in this profound book. It is really not that difficult. It's a miracle that you are here at all, so take the opportunity to free your soul of clutter, and purify and complete your happiness and contentedness. If you are open to it, you will put the pieces together naturally, because this potential for harmony is within us all - this book, and the eastern philosophies and musings of Kenny Loggins, are merely providing the guidance that is often required to make that final step and commitment towards total and complete inner fulfillment.

I stumbled upon this book since i have enjoyed other books by Dennis Waller .This book is another great work from Dennis Waller.

I recently enjoyed a quote "If you want to know,who are you?.Just take the average of the people you are associated with" so i am trying to associate with great people who lived in the earth and what is the best way to do that? It is to study these people who tried to spread great teaching and messages across the globe.

I also read several other books of Dennis Waller like Nagarjuna's Tree of Wisdom A Translation and enjoyed it.

I highly recommend this book to all readers liking this genre.

About the Author

Joel Waldfogel is Professor and Frederick R. Kappel Chair in Applied Economics at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. His main research interests are industrial organization and law and economics. You feel lucky, punk?

I am amazed that only two other people have reviewed this text. And to give it a bad review?! What are you thinking? My copy is the 23rd printing! What does that tell you about it? It is unfortunate for today's officers that this series is out of print. This is part of a three book series. The other two are Tactics for Criminal Patrol and The Tactical Edge. These texts were referenced as a source for some of the training at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy as of the winter of 2000. I'll grant you that the photos and stories are old, but no less important in the lessons they teach. This book was not meant to be a coffee table reader (graphic photos and text). It (and its two companion texts) were meant to keep cops alive. Well, so far I haven't died! This may not be the end all, be all of tactics manuals, but it is good. It survived in print for at least 19 years. The publisher went under sometime in the last decade. This is a classic in its field.

Worth a read, even if you're not a LEO

I bought this book in the hopes that, as a concealed weapons holder, there might be some useful bits to learn. As expected, though, the book is heavily centered on techniques and procedures that I would never encounter. Nonetheless, the book is a fascinating read on why police officers behave the way that they do, with numerous examples of police officers who died when they let their judgment lapse.

The downside is this book is very out of date. Published in 1980, the book could use an update that includes more modern procedures and weapons usage. Regardless, it's worth a read by anyone in the law enforcement field.

It's apenetrating, intense look at who you are, And who you would want to be. We all have a purpose for living, God's purpose and plan for our lives, most of us want control over our lives, but if we take an honest look at the messes we have made, it's not so difficult to surrender control to the One who designed us to accomplish specific works. He is the only one that can be trusted to never reject or abandon us.

Looking to the Upper Story

The bigger picture has always captivated me.

The idea that God is on a rescue mission to restore the world He created and the people in it to relationship with Him-- and how everything in the story of our lives, and all the individual stories we're living, are all working together to that end, and how, in fact, we are invited to play a part in that rescue mission story... It puts things in perspective.

Randy Frazee calls this bigger picture the 'upper story' in his book The Heart of the Story: God's Masterful Design to Restore His People. He calls our circumstances as we see them through our human experiences the 'lower story'. What I loved about this book was the idea of taking the whole entire bible--the hundreds of memorable and not so memorable 'lower' stories of human experience -- and making a basic summary of it to repaint it in light of the upper story, the bigger picture. In these stories innumerable many of us have grown up hearing about, the characters were firmly entrenched in their own lower stories of human circumstance, just like you and I. And yet, when we stand back and look at the bigger picture the Word of God is showing, we can see the upper story significance of each individual character's lower story (Have I driven home enough the 'story' idea yet?). There is something so innately encouraging in that. I happen to be firmly entrenched in my own lower story, and need constant reminders of that upper story God's unfolding just beyond my human vision, closer than my circumstances tell...

I was excited when I was offered this book for review because I relished the idea of digesting the whole entire story of the Bible all in one big gulp. Frazee, a teaching pastor by vocation and the author of numerous previous books, didn't disappoint in his anecdotal summary. I often get tripped up in the minor prophets. I take them one by one as moving pieces of literature, but struggle to fit them into the chronological narrative of Israel's story. The Heart of the Story helpfully wove the myriad of true tales together in a way that I could cognitively see where they fit into the story in history. And Frazee did it while also lifting the reader's eyes up to the way it all fits into the bigger picture / upper story.

If I could make any criticisms about this book, they would be only from a point of view of my admittedly snobby literaturary tastes :) I sometimes found his writing style a bit juvenile, as if he was trying too hard to sound 'cool', but because I believe this was an effort to make God's Word approachable by anyone, I think we should let it slide ;) It was extremely readable and that can be hard to find when it comes to wrestling with Biblical literature and matters of Theology.

All that said, I think you should read this book!

Good Primer on the Biblical Storyline

I think of people in my church right now.

We have a mix of people who are searching, but have not yet made a faith committment, new in the faith, but don't know how to read the bible, learning basic bible stories since they have never read the bible before.

Our church has many people who lack a basic biblical literacy that Christians have. They are new believers from unchurched background who are just now starting to read scriptures.

I can imagine churches giving this book to first time church visitors, new Christians, or even in using The Heart of the Story in a seeker oriented class. It could also serve a rightful place in a Christianity 101 type class, or as a personal 31 day devotional.

If you are just starting out in your Christian walk and want to have that big-picture overview of the narrative of Scripture, Frazee can be your guide. Along the way, Frazee makes several connections to our current life, particularly about how God can use ordinary and even unlikely people to advance His plan.

Great book! Easy to read.

Have you ever wondered what you are missing? Why on earth is Numbers and Leviticus included in the Bible? Why must we suffer through some of the Old Testament. Why can't I just read the gospels and forget the rest? In his book The Heart of the Story by Randy Frazee he takes you on a journey. the thing is this journey is about YOU. It is about how God designed all of history to restore us His people. Randy steps us through many of the Major stories of the Bible from Genesis to Revelations and shows how these books and stories are apart of us. I once heard that in order to fully understand who you are you need to understand where you came from. This history included in the scriptures helps us to see God's design! The same God who has placed such detailed order and design to even the tiniest of molecules to the most distant star that no one might ever see; this same God has woven a detail into us that we need to understand. Thanks to Zondervan for giving me this chance to read this advanced copy. I recomend this book for personal, church, and small group study!
