Necessary for anyone who uses energy

For someone whose entire capacity of knowledge stemmed from a 4th-grade research project, but who was pretty self-satisfied about her knowledge of the energy problem and its possible solutions nonetheless, this book was an eye-opener. Anyone who believes that they are a clean-energy advocate -- or anyone who believes that renewable energy is not a necessity -- should read this book. It is a primer in the very best sense of the word, readying the mind to think critically about and discuss (and debate if necessary) our consumption of energy, our current energy sources and energy possibilities. The diverse set of readings show us where we've been, where we are and where we can go; it juxtaposes the dreams that scientists and policy-makers had decades ago with today's energy realities.

Laura Nader's Reader serves as an introduction to prominent thinkers in the energy field -- Amory Lovins, Duane Lockard Barbara Rose Johnston stand out in my mind -- and, perhaps most importantly, to the idea that while energy shifts must by their nature be revolutionary, they need not be radical. The idea that we must subject ourselves to authoritarian rationing in order to limit our energy use or change our energy sources -- the idea that placing limits on our energy use is somehow anti-progress or illiberal or undemocratic -- is soundly turned on its head in this reader. Through the readings, we learn that we have a choice. We learn to think about our energy sources as intrinsically tied up in the way we live, rather than merely fueling the way we live.

"Energy in Action" portions of the book give readers hope by providing examples of paradigm shifts in thought and action that are already being played out with regard to energy use.

While a few readings are a bit redundant -- for instance, the many mentions of Nader's work in the Committee On Nuclear and Alternative Energy Systems study groups could easily have been replaced by one or two -- and the space in the book could have been used to flesh out other issues like energy policy's relationship with foreign policy or on energy possibilities other than solar, overall the book is a great read. While I used the book for a course with Professor Nader at UC Berkeley, this book is not only for students. It's a necessity for anyone who wants to speak authoritatively on energy issues, and to think critically about the way they live their lives.

Five years ago, A. Kenneth Ciongoli and Jay Parini brought out the first collection of writing on the Italian-American experience, Beyond the Godfather. This year, in time for Columbus Day, comes this hefty, exhaustive anthology. Barreca, author of A Sitdown with the Sopranos and They Used to Call Me Snow White... but I Drifted, selected and edited these essays by more than 90 influential Italian-American writers. Following Barreca's introduction is a witty piece by her brother Hugo, who offers his impression of Italian-American storytelling: "it was considered to be telling close to the truth... if what you reported as your own actions had actually happened to somebody at one time or another." No such collection would be complete without selections from Gay Talese's Unto the Sons, Barbara Grizzuti Harrison's Italian Days, Mario Puzo's The Godfather and Pietro di Donato's Christ in Concrete, considered to be the first great Italian-American novel. In "Food and Fatalism," Wally Lamb offers his recollections of growing up in Norwich, Conn.; in a selection from Were You Always an Italian?, Maria Laurino makes sense of such dialect words as "stunod," or idiot. Spanning Italian American writing by 90 authors since 1800, this anthology consists of essays, poems, and fiction and nonfiction excerpts. The authors included range from the well known (e.g., David Baldacci, Don DeLillo, Evan Hunter, Ray Romano) to those many readers will be unfamiliar with, including a fair number of academics. Although most of the pieces are reprints, several authors have contributed original pieces; most notable are Wally Lamb's "Food and Fatalism" and Josephine Hendin's "Who Will You Marry Now?" Editor Barreca's (They Used To Call Me Snow White, But I Drifted) introduction and her brother's counterintroduction are informative and personal. They also consider the unifying theme of the works included the transforming nature of the immigrant experience and the resulting need to craft communities. In the end, this is a mixed bag: a bit academic for public libraries and a bit too popular for academics. There are not many books of similar scope, but Bill Tonelli and Huston Smith's The Portable Italian-American: The Landmark Collection of the Best Italian-American Writing is coming from Morrow in March. Outstanding!

If you enjoy stories about Italian American's you won't be able to put down Gina Barreca's anthology. A notably missing work is a recent book that probably would have been represented had it been around in 2002 - Amatore Mille's ELEVEN DAYS IN AUGUST - a heartwarming memoir about a Wall Street sales executive who "vacations" from his NY job each year to rejoin his Italian family in their Italian sausage sandwich business at the Wisconsin State Fair - a must-read for lover's of Barreca's book!

Another Gina Barreca hit!

Once again Gina Barreca wows the reader with a wonderful book by a talented author who does beautiful anthologies as well. She finds the reality, the humor and the depth in any situation. Those who love her writing should check out "They Used to call me snow white, but I drifted" "The Penguin Book of Women's Humor" "Too Much of a Good Thing is Wonderful" and the Washington Post Magazine where once a month she and Gene Weingarten do a column together. They are publishing a book together in 2003 that will also be great.

Into a medium sized book add: a little under one hundred Italian American writers spanning an almost equal number of years, a liberal amount of humor and irony, chopped up tragedy, mixed with redemption, olive oil (of course!), and finally one terrific editor (Gina Barreca). One need not stir liberally as the contents tend to mix and mingle well on their own. What do you get?
The most complex and multifaceted Italian American anthology that anybody has ever cooked up. Bravo!

Very enlightening

My only experience with autism is from what I've seen on TV and movies. Ms Jones does a superb job of explaining to the layman what everyone should know about people with autism. I recommend this book to all teachers so they not only have a better understanding of children in their classroom with autism, but a better understanding of how children treat each other and children of autism. It should be in every classroom around the world. I highly recommend everyone read this very enlightening and sometimes profound book.

Not easy to pin down... and that's good

When I first approached No You Don't, I wasn't sure what to expect. I've read a number of autism memoirs, novels about us, and monographs that purported to tell "the story" of our condition, both as research for my own books and as a way of attempting to understand myself and my relationship to society as a whole. In every case, I have found other autism books to be missing some key element of the discussion, either because they try too hard to generalize from a few anecdotes to an entire population or because they reinforce the just-so stories that explain away the diversity of Autistic experience by reinforcing stereotypes about us.

No You Don't cleverly avoids all of those things, and it does so without reveling in its own cleverness. Ms. Jones's series of essays are nuanced and detailed, and she is careful to highlight the ways in which her experience both does and does not reflect the conditions that other Autistics face. She discusses common problems without sweeping generalizations, confronts specific cases of abuse and brutality from her past, and narrates her path toward an understanding of her own situation with a disarming combination of humility and kindness that, in every case, thoroughly explained her perspective without dictating that others should automatically adopt it.

If I had to try to pin down No You Don't to a certain genre or format, I would say that it is a book of skeptical essays that does not shrink from the task of reviewing lived experience and empirical evidence and contrasting it sharply against armchair theories and public perceptions. It is not only that, though. It is also a primer on patience and understanding, and a thoroughly enjoyable lesson about the importance of knowing oneself instead of defining oneself by the expectations of others.

I come from a family that has a multi-generational history of neurodivergence. In one way or another, most of us have been touched by learning and developmental disabilities, neurological problems, and/or mental illness, and in Ms. Jones's essays I found not only echoes of myself, but of my mother, my sister, and my grandfather. It is a terribly important book, not just for people who are attempting to understand autism, but also for people who are feeling lost or alone due to any hidden disability, mental illness, or recent trauma. It is a book about hope that is not afraid to confront the darkness and name the shadows, and an object lesson in a market clogged with abstract morality tales.

I can not recommend it strongly enough.

Incredible

If you are the parent of an autistic child, someone who works with autistic people, or an autistic person yourself, you absolutely must read this. This is the only thing I have ever read that even comes close to helping me understand an experience of autism. I have come to realize from reading this how I could have been (I'm not 100% sure) complicit in ostracizing my autistic classmates and community members. I have a sensory processing disorder and am socially awkward, but I am not autistic, so the perspective in this book was incredibly enlightening. I have come to understand now that in asserting my boundaries with an autistic person, I cannot be so aggressive; I also cannot assume that "common sense" means that everyone is on the same page as me.

I've recommended this book to every autistic person and anyone affiliated with them in my life. I recommend it to you, too. It is so important.

Basic, yes, but invaluable for many people

There are so many books which offer advice on investments and this is one of the best. At the outset, I presume to share some lessons I have learned over the years which seem relevant to Khalfani's suggestions as to how to "conquer 30 costly mistakes and multiply your wealth." First, the importance of systematic savings. Next, the importance of compounded interest on what we save. Finally, the importance of having a realistic plan for increasing one's net worth through systematic savings and the compound interest accumulated by it. Unless and until an individual investor fully appreciates the importance of the first two and then commits to the third, costly mistakes will be made with inevitable (but avoidable) results.
Khalfani organizes her material within five Parts: Strategic Slip-Ups, Buying Blunders, Holding/Monitoring Mishaps, Selling Snafus, and Financial Advisor Foul-Ups. Although each seems to focus on mistakes of judgment, she explains how to avoid the don'ts by doing their opposite. Whereas unsuccessful investors focus on products, successful investors focus on the process of investing. For example, they
* Set specific, measurable, and realistic investment goals (Chapter 1)
* Do not have concentrated wealth (Chapter 9)
* Monitor your investment frequently and rigorously (Chapter 13)
* Have a sell strategy (Chapter 17)
* Take full advantage of all available independent research (Chapter 25)
My guess (only a guess) is that this book will not be of substantial value to sophisticated investors. They and their financial advisors probably know which "costly mistakes" to avoid and how to avoid them. For so many others, however, I think that Khalfani's book will provide the guidance they need to achieve greater success with their investments than would otherwise be possible. As she explains, the investment process involves five distinct phases: strategizing to identify and then meet personal goals, buying the right (i.e. most appropriate) investments, holding and carefully monitoring those investments, selling investments in a judicious and prudent manner, and dealing effectively with intermediaries such as stockbrokers and financial planners. Basic stuff? Yes, of course, but so many private investors are either unaware of this process or (for whatever reasons) lose patience with it.
It remains for each of us to determine what "wealth" means. More to the point, it is our responsibility, indeed our obligation to protect and preserve whatever resources we may have, investing them wherever and whenever most appropriate. If you are among those in need of expert guidance when making such investment decisions, Khalfani's book can be of substantial assistance. However, as she correctly insists, you must first understand the process...and then invest as much of your time and energy may be required before you make investment decisions.

Cogent Advice for Novice Investors

Each year, it seems reams of page are published on the subject of investing. Many are forgettable and some should absolutely be avoided. But a friend told me to check this book out and I was pleasantly surprised. Lynnette Khalfani is a former reporter for "The Wall Street Journal" and CNBC. To her credit, she keeps the chapters short and to the point and ends each with what she refers to as a "$ummary $uccess $tory." The book is clear, concise, and east to read and follow.
Khalfani essentially notes that mistakes made by people in investing are fairly common to the majority of investors. She divides the book into five sections: strategizing your goals, buying, holding, selling, and dealing with investment intermediaries such as stock brokers. She has an easy-to-read, friendly style of writing. The advice is basic, and more sophisticated investors will consider as remedial or average, at best, but for anyone who knows little about investing, it's a great starting point.
Her advice is solid throughout, and the piece of advice she considers most important is particularly good: Don't invest prematurely. By that she means you should have a stash of three-to-six months of expenses, a will, and disability insurance before you dive into investing. If you are new to investing, read this book first, you'll be glad you did.

A Great Resource

Investing Success inspired me to kick start 2004...and to develop a strategy for investing. The book is sophisticated enough to be helpful, concise and well written. The examples Summery Success Strategies at the end of each chapter help me stay focused and on track. Finally, a book that tells you what to do and how to clean up the mess if you've made mistakes.

I am very glad that I discovered this book - I never knew that the Balkan Math Olympiad had such beautiful problems! I have since spent countless hours working on these problems.
What distinguishes this book from the BMO contests forum page on AoPS is the quality of the solutions and diagrams. Each problem is provided with at least one solution; all are complete and easy to follow. Often times the solutions show you an alternative method to the way you solved it and it is very satisfying. Furthermore, all geometry problems are supplied with really helpful diagrams that simplify the problem greatly. I have truly enjoyed this useful book and recommend it to anyone who is preparing for Math Olympiads.

Excellent contribution to the Maths Competition literature

This book is written by two experienced and wise hands from the mathematical olympiad circuit. In common with most international competitions, the problems and associated solutions are also available at the Art of Problem Solving website.

The advantage of using this excellent book rather than the AoPS site are that (a) the quality of the solutions is excellent, and you don't have to trawl through material wondering which suggested solutions are correct and which are flawed, (b) it is very handy to have these problems analyzed in one place and (c) the quality of the diagrams in the book is excellent.

The standard of the problems at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad is a bit easier than the IMO and the Romanian Master of Mathematics. On the other hand, the harder problems are more challenging than one finds in most national mathematical olympiads (except for those countries with a very strong mathematics competition tradition).

Who needs this book? Well, anyone preparing to sit a national mathematical olympiad (in the UK, BMO round 2) and anyone hoping to compete in a secondary (high) school international (regional or global) mathematics competition will enjoy this book. It would make an ideal birthday or Christmas (or culturally equivalent) present for a strong young mathematician. I urge schoolteachers who work in mathematically strong schools to make sure that this is held in the school library.

This book presents 120 problems given at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad between
1984 and 2013. These are high quality Olympiad problems, which are little known outside
the space of the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad, as I could see myself during the
training of the US International Mathematical Olympiad Team. The problems originate
in a part of the world (Eastern Europe) with a long tradition in mathematics competitions.
The difficulty level of the problems is slightly below the International Mathematical Olympiad,
and on par with the national mathematical Olympiads of strong countries, and so this material
can be used by people training for such competitions.

The book is a true gem, as it presents very detailed and carefully written solutions.
The authors have put a lot of effort to make this book attractive to the reader,
both in contents and in appearance. What I particularly like is that most of the
problems are given more than one solution, allowing the reader to
"dominate" the problem. Because of this, some of the problems can make good
topics for math clubs and math circles.

The authors of the book are famous posers of Olympiad problems
and coaches of Olympiad teams. I have met them at various mathematical
events around the world, I have read their publications, and I can say that
they are true ambassadors of elementary mathematics. We are fortunate
to have them share some of their insights with us in this book.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in problem solving at
elementary level.
