Excellent Sales Primer

Anyone interested in making sales (Any type of sales) their career, would benefit from reading this book. Much of the text borders on the obvious, however it's strange how often we neglect the obvious. I first read this book (9) years ago. I continue to pick it up to this date as a refresher. Harvey Mackey does an excellent job of making this a "I can't put it down book" Non-avid readers will breese through the pages. Must read!

Harvey's Take On Things

Some worthy information about particular business issues are raised and noted, and for the most part this is an off-the-cuff soliloquy talk about how Harvey views business, and the world. There is nothing more amusing than some wealthy person in business who thinks they have the answers and the remedies for the rest of us. Written in the late 1980s, some of the attitudes presented towards hiring potential employees will become evident. All in all, this is an easy and quick-read.
I read "Swim With The Sharks" front-to-back, however each chapter concerns a different topic, so one does not have to read this book straight through from page 1 to the end.
One thing I found a bit quirky were the consistent references to allegedly "successful" collegiate and professional sports coaches. I don't feel it's an appropriate analogy to commonly equate coaches with the situations outside of the sports world. The sports culture is often not applicable to making a business deal, dealing with corporate culture, and/or avoiding mistakes with people socially. The sports in itself is a microcosm of society, but a separate world within its own. Time and time again I would chuckle to myself as I would read a quote made by Vince Lambardi, some NBA coach, or read a personal anecdote from the now disgraced coach Lou Holtz. Having to read Yogi Berra's lobotomy-like quotes and philosophy was quite dull, and not very informative.
Some helpful and practical information is the "66 question customer profile," as well as the "12P Competitor profile." I liked his noting (book written 1988) of how people who usually don't have money go out and buy a brand new "prestigious" car that depreciates.
Mackay also reminds us (or me atleast) of the importance of writing small yet important things down on paper and/or notepads.
One of his tips on how to save time is to drive near the front of a grocery store you plan on shopping in. Then look for how many people are in line. If its too crowded don't go in. Thanks Harvey. You've changed my life with your insights.
He also tried to break an attempt by his employees to form a union, which he lost. He openly stated how he conned very employee into thinking they were "special" and "important" with his one-to-one meetings with them. It didn't work. They didn't buy it.
He does understand (see "Dig You Well Before Your Thirsty") the art of the schmooze in talking with celebrities such as O.J. and world figures such as Castro about things that they do, and interest them in their free time and NOT about what they do for work.
All in all, useful things can be gleaned from "Swim With The Sharks," and it's a very quick read.

Despite some dating, a true classic for business and life

This is a great book, whether you're an MBA or just someone trying to get an advantage in everyday life. Harvey Mackay's lessons are to be treasured--he was way ahead of the curve in the mid-1980s. It may be hard to appreciate this today because some of the advice isn't fresh anymore: we all have phones in our cars and we all use answering machines to screen calls and we all take notes on the run on little portable recorders. --Well, many of us do, at any rate. Hardly revolutionary advice anymore, but that's only because we listened to Harvey in the first place.
Some of the chapters contain gold that will always be valuable, however. One of my favorites involves the phrase "Dusseldorf passes." I won't spoil it for the unread, but I will say the lesson from that chapter is one everyone should take with them through life. It will save you a lot of money and regret.
And the Mackay hiring process. So thorough it seems to border on the obsurd, but the more I work at various companies the more I wish all businesses were as picky about acquiring workers. Harvey shows you that even "lowly" positions such as the receptionist or secretary are among your company's most critical, for 99% of your customers will get their first impression of your company--and in some cases the *only* impression of your company--through this crucial individual. Yet many companies get some 18-year-old part-timer to answer the phones and file valuable company documents--*and they're proud of this cost-cutting maneuver!* They consider this smart management. Harvey explains why this is actually a very dumb move.
He also shows you how to get "impossible" tickets to the big game and how to get a reservation at virtually any hotel, even ones that are "completely booked." And no, these are not devious ways. They're just common sense, actually.
Whether you're an ambitious manager at a Fortune 500 company or an owner of a small businesses on the corner, this book has nuggets. So grab it. And then read the other books Harvey Mackay has written. While they didn't have the freshness or the impact of this first one (is that possible?) they are still well worth your time.

This is a pretty thorough book on coaching Christian leaders, but it doesn't read well and is bogged down with long bullet point lists of questions and arbitrary categories. But I suppose it may serve it's intended purpose; it would be a good reference manual for a certified coach.

Puar combines transnational feminist and queer theory, Foucauldian biopolitics, Deleuzian philosophy, and technoscience criticism, and draws from an extraordinary range of sources, including governmental texts, legal decisions, films, television, ethnographic data, queer media, and activist organizing materials and manifestos. Looking at various cultural events and phenomena, she highlights troublesome links between terrorism and sexuality: in feminist and queer responses to the Abu Ghraib photographs, in the triumphal responses to the Supreme Court’s Lawrence decision repealing anti-sodomy laws, in the measures Sikh Americans and South Asian diasporic queers take to avoid being profiled as terrorists, and in what Puar argues is a growing Islamophobia within global queer organizing.

A must for IT pro's with a little bit of PowerShell experience

I definitely think if you are an IT Pro with a little bit of PowerShell experience this book is a must. I hesitate a bit to recommend this book if you are trying to learn PowerShell from the ground up, even though the reference and introduction sections are very useful well written. Along the same lines, if you are looking for a comprehensive book to teach you more advanced concepts in detail, This isn't the right book for that.

The book really shines when you need a starting point for a script or are stuck worth a part of the script. There are also a plethora of examples and some scripts that can be used out of the box as is. Some notable chapters are: Active Directory, Remoting, the Interactive Shell and Code Reuse.

This book contains A lot of good practical knowledge that is presented in a task based fashion. This book doesn't rehash the built-in documentation; but rather builds on it giving you a jump start to working code, saving you a lot of late nights.

The Joy of Coding...

This is the first PowerShell book you should buy, and may be the only one you need. I'm a developer (C/C++/C#) and Appendix A alone (language reference) makes this book worth its price.

Suggested reading order:
1. Part I, Part II Chapters 1-5 (fundamentals)
2. Appendix A (language reference -- best of its kind. Short, to the point, awesome).
3. Skip around as needed/interested.

The cookbook examples are useful, the descriptions are enlightening, and after Chapter 1/Appendix 1, you will have all of the "Ah ha!" moments you need to truly understand the great tool that is PowerShell.

Regardless of PowerShell version, get the latest edition of this book. I have all three editions, and it's gotten better each time.

Want to know why something works the way it does in PowerShell?, then this is the book for you!

With this 3rd edition of the book, I decided to read the book cover to cover. If you're brand new to PowerShell and have no prior experience with it, there are other books that I would recommend to you to read prior to reading this book. To me "Cookbook" is the perfect description for this book. It's almost like a comprehensive reference for cooking with PowerShell. It includes all of the PowerShell basics, but also dives deep into the depths of PowerShell and explains how things actually work. If you're like me and you not only enjoy accomplishing a task, but also want to know why something works the way it does, then this is the book for you. The only reason I would recommend other books to new comers is I would be afraid that some of these details that aren't necessary for a beginner to know might confuse them and make them think that PowerShell is more complicated than it really is. With that said, this is the perfect book for someone with a little prior experience with PowerShell.

This book is definitely worth it's weight in gold when it comes to PowerShell and I'm sure the physical copy of the book weighs a lot! By keeping my attention through two months and 1739 pages (EPUB), the quality of the book and the writing ability of Lee Holmes speaks for itself.

This book is for Service Professionals or those wishing to become Service Professionals. It gives the reader everything he/she will need to pass the required exam for the Apple Certified Support Professional (ACSP) designation. This rating replaces the Apple Certified Help Desk Specialist (ACHDS) rating and covers Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Each chapter provides in-depth coverage of the workings of the operating system. The Appendix includes the Apple Troubleshooting Workflow Chart and troubleshooting methodology used by Apple Technicians.

You'll learn about Installation and Setup, including configuring, installation troubleshooting, etc. Lesson 2 covers User Accounts, how to manage them, account security, and more. Lesson 3 covers Storage, Partitions and Volumes, File Ownership and Permissions, File Management via the Command Line. Lesson 4 covers the Mac OS X Volume Hierarchy, Mac OS X Metadata, Archiving and Backup. Lesson 5 discusses Applications and Boot Camp, Processes, and how to run Windows on a Mac. Lesson 6 provides detailed information about Network Configuration, fundamental networking concepts, configuring Mac OS X networking, and network troubleshooting. Written without Proofreading

It's hard for me to get past my only major complaint with this book: the complete lack of proofreading. It's littered with typos, duplicate or missing words, and sentence fragments. At least a dozen in the first half of the book alone! For example, pg 27 ends with, "However, if you wish to migrate from another MAC system." That's an if/then statement without the "then" part. That's the whole sentence, I swear.

Technically speaking it's very thorough, without going overboard. The information is presented clearly and logically. I'm a novice MAC user whose clients use a few MACs for nothing important but are looking to expand their usefulness and this book helps me understand some of the finer elements the other idiots guide books don't.

Really, it's a fine book. But if typo's drive you nuts -and this book has more than its fair share of them- wait until they release a revised copy.

Get this book for the EXAM!

I purchased this book to prepare myself for the OS X Support Essentials 10.5 Exam, I PASSED and PASSED WELL! Everything that you need to know is in this book. If you want to pass the exam and can't afford to attend a training course this book is all you will need. It covers every topic in sufficient detail, it is easy to understand and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone wishing to embark on a career supporting OS 10.5 machines. Please make sure you read the Knowledge Base References at the end of every chapter. They will give you greater background on each topic area. Kevin M White has produced a great text here, well done!.

THE PLAYER is a standalone teen novel (200 pages). No book needs to be read before it or after it. There is no swearing in the book.

This book also includes a story called: “Ally Has Amnesia.”
(It is an hour read—two at the most.)

Note about the novel, The Player: Parts of it are from Melanie Marks’ book Fake Boyfriend Wars, which is another book about the characters in this book. But since a large portion overlaps this book, even though the storylines are different, it is not recommended that you read both versions—as large portions are the same. (Choose only one version.) This is a standalone novel.

Also included in this book, as a bonus, is a new story about Ally and Griffin. It’s called “Ally Has Amnesia.” The story can be read as a standalone, there is no cliffhanger and has a happy ending, however the story will have more meaning if you’ve read Melanie Marks’ book, His Kiss. (It’s only a dollar right now.)

Ending sucked

This book was just ok to me, not like her other books. Seems to be rushed at end, and heroine falls in love again with hero awfully!!y fast, when heart was all messed up due to her ex boyfried dropping her for bestie. I didn't like how it stayed in the past with their memories and the present was rushed.

About the Author
Kwa Chong Guan is Head of External Programs, Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, Nanyang Technological University. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of History, National University of Singapore. He was previously Head of the SAFTI Military Institute's Department of Strategic Studies and concurrently, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Division of History of the National Institute of Education's School of Arts. Before joining the SAFTI Military Institute, Mr Kwa served in various capacities in the National Heritage Board, the National Museum and the Oral History Center. Mr Kwa started his working career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before being posted to the Ministry of Defence. He was commissioned into the Singapore Armed Forces in 1969 and had served in a variety of reservist command and staff appointments up to Division level.
