There is a better book by the same author

While this book covers all the basic topics for an introductory book... I feel it doesn't delve into enough detail. Also, the writing style is terse and doesn't flow well. It was published in 1984.

I would highly recommend Lad's more recent book (Ayurvedic Remedies) that was published in 1998. It covers everything that is already in this book plus you get remedies for common ailments. That book is relatable and written in a more friendly manner. He addresses some western aspects (for example he touches on how westerners are averse to vaman/vomiting therapy). Its just $3 more, I would get that.

Keeping it short: this is the only modern intro. to ayurveda that is utterly complete, thorough, concise... well written, top to bottom, thoughtfully organized.... full of very real everyday applications of ayurveda.... it's theory plus application.... confused about ayurveda? want more 'cause you still don't quite get it? yes, this is the book you need.... as an individual's very first book on ayurveda, it is potentially very dense, depending upon consciousness.... if you've already got the essentials in your head, this book will give you an acceleration of understanding...

excellent book

I had the privilage of being treated by Dr. Lad as well as going to several clases he gives at the Ayurvedic institute in Albuquerque NM. The book is a wonderful aid in trying to understand and identify health and disease. You have to be able to understand that "western" medicine is not the answer for everything and that in many cases it will eventually make you even sicker. What do you prefer, Prozac or a cup of some herbal tea that will eventually help you with depression?. What do you prefer, a cup of chamomile tea along with jatamansi or Pepto Bismol?. Ayurveda is something very real, helpful and extremely cheap. Hmmmm..... just wondering why allopacy wants to destroy alternative methods. Even better, is Ayurveda really an alternative treatment? 3,000 years before Jesus Ayurveda was being practiced...so, just wondering who's really alternative. Give it a try, Vasant Lad is a great humble and loving person.

Innovative clarity on a sacred journey

As a teaching Reiki Master for over 14 years I love the simplicity and clarity that Dr. Shipon brings to the topic of sharing Reiki. He gets to the heart of the matter. The extraneous history, mythology and controversial competitions of recent years are left out or boiled down to the very essence of this sacred and spiritual healing tradition and topic. The book is excellent for the beginner practitioner and and can be powerful for those who merely are curious. The advanced practitioner will notice there are some breaks in tradition. For example the Reiki symbols are included and the experience of attunement by the in-person Reiki Master is made optional by offering another approach and process.

In my opinion this small spare book beautifully shares one soul's journey using Reiki as a guide and support. Because of his professional training it is clean and clear and very human. Truly a Work of Art!

For me, Reiki Psychology is truly a watershed book that is nothing less than a work of art. Like the author, I am a Reiki Master and a licensed psychotherapist. I am also a college professor who has taught courses in Energy Medicine to medical students. For 30 years I have been a student and a practitioner of the healing arts ranging from shamanism to Qigong. In all my experience and all my research, I have never come across anything so simple and so powerful with such potential to heal not only one's physical and mental states but to heal our species and the planet as well.

To limit this book to psychology is like saying The Field of Dreams is about baseball. Dr. Shipon has created a clear, compassionate, concise (at a little over 100 pages) and accessible guide not only to a healthy psychology but a healthy life. I can think of only a handful of books that I have read that have achieved such authenticity and elegance. I will be ordering copies for all of my loved ones and friends.

All true artists recognize that they are not the source of their "creations." Something loving and beautiful has truly emerged through this author and his life. For this I am deeply grateful.

Great read

I found this book to be amazing. Having no prior experience with Reiki, I was not sure what to expect, but Dr. Shipon explains the concept of Reiki Psychology in a straightforward and customizable manner that can offer immediate benefits in terms of relaxation techniques and general outlook to anyone with an open mind. I highly recommend!

In Better But Not Well, Richard G. Frank and Sherry A. Glied examine the well-being of people with mental illness in the United States over the past fifty years, addressing issues such as economics, treatment, standards of living, rights, and stigma. Marshaling a range of new empirical evidence, they first argue that people with mental illness―severe and persistent disorders as well as less serious mental health conditions―are faring better today than in the past. Improvements have come about for unheralded and unexpected reasons. Rather than being a result of more effective mental health treatments, progress has come from the growth of private health insurance and of mainstream social programs―such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, housing vouchers, and food stamps―and the development of new treatments that are easier for patients to tolerate and for physicians to manage.

The authors remind us that, despite the progress that has been made, this disadvantaged group remains worse off than most others in society. The "mainstreaming" of persons with mental illness has left a policy void, where governmental institutions responsible for meeting the needs of mental health patients lack resources and programmatic authority. To fill this void, Frank and Glied suggest that institutional resources be applied systematically and routinely to examine and address how federal and state programs affect the well-being of people with mental illness.

A cut and dry policy book

It's a relatively unbiased view of the evolution of mental health policy in the US, and it covers most of the key points, from availability and structure of care to the costs and financing, as well as quality of care. There's also some minor discussion of rights and social stigma based on survey data. However, it buys into the mainstream narrative of psychiatry, which is very positive toward the field, which is challenge by a lot of new research, as well as books such as "American Psychosis". This book is a great start, but you should probably couple it with a few other readings if you really want a comprehensive understanding of what's happened.

I found the coverage of factors that have impacted mental health care in the US very comprehensive and authoritative. The authors are clearly thoughtful about the complexities, including the philosophical and sociological perspectives at play, and extremely knowledgeable about the pragmatic details of policy development and implementation. What I've Been Waiting For

This book is great--very informative, positive, and practical. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about getting a puppy. As an experienced animal handler, I feel that this book is a great guide for the beginner and experienced alike. Among the things that I find particularly useful are the careful, step-by-step instructions, specific examples from puppies that Millan raised while working on this book, discussions from experienced breeders and dog trainers, and an extensive appendix of suggestions for further reading. The only thing not in the book that I would have loved would be a more thorough discussion of integrating the new puppy into a home that has older dogs already. While there is some discussion of this, it is not enough to provide the guidance I really would like.

While some dog trainers will denounce Millan's methods as archaic and harsh, I would encourage readers to keep an open mind. While Millan does not employ a positive-reinforcement-only approach--which is what many of his detractors prefer--his methods are gentle and concerned only with the well-being of the dog. His methods have made a huge difference in my life and in my dog's life. She is happier and more balanced when I follow Millan's formula. Everyone who meets her comments on how well-behaved she is and takes great pleasure in petting and playing with her--even people who are typically frightened of dogs or just uncomfortable around them. As a high-energy, alpha-type dog, I don't believe that would be the case if I had not followed Millan's methods; for my strong-willed dog, positive reinforcement is only sometimes a strong enough motivation to encourage the behaviors I want, but discipline coupled with positive reinforcement is exactly what she needs.

This book plus the Monks' covers all you need for puppies

Years ago I found the Monks of New Skete's books and videos. I also read as many dog training books as I could find. In every book, I learned something new and even moved on to teach dog obedience training. When I found Cesar for the first time, his concepts about energy, claiming, "nose-eyes-ears," and pack leadership filled in the gaps of my dog knowledge. I wish I'd know this in the past with my other dogs, but as Cesar says, "Live in the moment." Luckily I found about him when my Standard Schnauzer was abut eight moths old. Cesar has changed my life with my dogs.

This new book about puppies is not too late for me even though my Schnauzer is now four years. It gave me a nice reminiscence of my dog as a puppy and reminded me to rehabilitate him as a dog, but also to find things to do that he will enjoy because of his breed.

IMO, if owners use Cesar's new book along with the Monks of New Skete's "The Art of Raising a Puppy," there will be fewer surrenders to shelters during their dog's adolescent stage. They're a dynamic duo!

Poor as an instruction guide

I bought this book hoping it would be a good instruction / how-to guide. Unfortunately the book is not really laid out for this purpose. It's very heavy on personal reflection, anecdotes and story telling. This may be good for fans of the show or people that prefer learning through stories. It gets the book to 320 pages, but that's quite a bit to wade through. I am now looking for a more traditional how-to style book....
